Finally got a date

Sorry guys not with a woman; the date to have robotic surgery on 03/03/11.  Dr. says two night hospital stay 10 - 14 days with the cath.  I'm aware the cath is placed while you are unconcious, however the darn thing is removed when you are wide awake.  Should I load up on pain pills prior to having the cath removed? 

Looking over the paperwork I just signed (may cause bleeding, infection, incontinance, ed and death), makes me so nervous about this entire event I could explode.  I hate my life right now however I definitely want it to continue.

Hi Viper. I can only give you my experience, but remember, we are all
different. I've never heard of anyone having pain when the cath is removed. A weird feeling...yes, but no pain. Mine was in for 14 days or so. When the Dr. tried to remove it he couldn't.......it was stuck! So he advised me to come back in a week and he would try again. The very next day after the failed removal attempt, when I was sitting on the throne, the darn thing just slid out! No pain, no fuss....just slipped out.

Consent forms are always scary, no matter how minor the surgery.  Incontinence and ED are surely at least temporary probabilities, as I'm sure you know, but don't let yourself get hung up on the scarier possibilities mentioned on the form.

Catheter removal is not painful.  It's sort of an odd feeling, but not pain.  It's over with almost before you know it's happening.

Time now to just let things happen at their own pace and put the worries out of your mind.  Do some fitness work to get yourself into the best shape possible.  We'll be watching for updates.

As I am sitting here waiting for my husband to get out of his surgery, you made me laugh. Not from your situation, but from the "I got a date" the first thing I thought was.....WOW cool, the dude got a date!! Exciting! Then I open up the thread and you say "not with a girl!" HAHAHAHAHA thanks for that. (really, I needed that chuckle)

I will update on how it all goes with Michael, so stay tuned to how it all goes, cath removal and all. May not be pretty, but will certainly be the truth of Michaels experience. Hope it will help you.

Taking the cath out is usually a minor thing. The relief of not having it covers everything else.

If I may observe, you are freaking out. Take a deep breath and go on with your life. Everything about your surgery is out of your hands except that you have to get to the hospital at a certain time. You may want to notice that very few of us on this board have had the "side effect" of death. You have made a decision and, as with many of us, it will play out in terms of things that you will be able to manage.

"bleeding, infection, incontinance, ed" Yup -- the first two are rare, the last two common. Worrying now won't help one bit. Improve your diet, get some exercise, enjoy the fact that you are alive and are likely to continue to be so.

Viper, I had 21 catheters removed, and none of them hurt coming out. Creepy feeling, perhaps, but no pain.

On the bright side, right after the catheter comes out you will pee with such vigor you'll want to invite your friends over to watch (or at least listen).

Just to reinforce what everyone else has said, the catheter removal is not painful, just a strange feeling. My sense of happiness for getting rid of the catheter made me forget anything else involving its removal.

As I posted elsewhere, when I went to get it removed, I said go ahead, and she had informed me that she had already removed it--unbelievable.

No problem whatsoever.

Glad to make Ms. Rossman chuckle a bit. I often try a little humor to lighten my anxiety over this terrible ordeal. Thanks to all for the cath feedback. I might invite all my friends over for a "pee party" like "worried guy" suggested, LOL. Hopefully the cath thing will not be too bad, I can't imagine the dang thing getting stuck like Magaboo's experience, OUCH! Its so weird, my blood pressure normally runs 128/78 with a slight variance, however when I go to Dr. Bighands my BP has never been under 150/90. The whole things freaks me out. Thanks everybody for the feedback. I will share my story as it unfolds.

Hang tuff my friend. It does get better with time. The catheter will be no problem for you as it is inserted while you are in surgery and the removal is a blessing with no pain. If there is one positive thing about the catheter it's the fact you don't have to get up at night to go to the bathroom. Your stats are encouraging and you will be fine in no time. Stay positive and keep your head up high.

I had no pain. Nurse did her thing pulled and it was out. Same thing with the drain I had. Nurse distracted my wife and I and it was out.

All surgeries have the risk of infection, bleeding and death, so its routine for them to have you sign it

What really gave me the willies was signing the form that said I was responsible for all charges that the Ins Co did not pay for. Luckily The surgery went perfect, recovery perfect and now $0 out of pocket

No pain associated with catheter removal when the tube is 1st pulled out its a Geyser, it flows out faster than a fire house and WOW what a relief. NO pain meds necessary

No pain with my surgery or recovery and the catheter actually made it easy to go out and not worry about going, It is a breeze to empty the bag even in public bathrooms and no-one could tell I was packing one. I remember the Dr sent me home with no pain meds and only advised an extra strength tylenol IF I needed it, I never needed it. Overnight stay and I was released less that 24 hrs from the time I 1st walked into the hospital

Actually thinking back slightly painful part was the post surgery drive home, the seatbelt was right against my abdomin and every bump, acceleration or stop caused the belt to press against my stomach.

My nerves are almost as shot as yours, as I was being prepped for surgery at a different hospital and got sent home due to a previously undiagnosed UTI.

I am confidant we'll both be fine. If you'd like to talk that week live, that is possible. Perhaps car conversation....new Viper or an older model?

Viper, I too was terrified of the cath removal, but as everyone said, it doesn't hurt. But personally, I was distracted by the enormous diaper waiting for me after the cath. I told the nurse I brought my own (normal sized Depends), but apparently, my doctor insists that every patient leave with one of the huge bulky ones. So, as I was contemplating the specatacle of the diaper, the cath was removed without my getting nervous or feeling any discomfort. But, walking out of the hospital, I was very concious of the squishy, wrinkly sound the diaper was making with each step...

Yale has got to be one of the best hospitals in the country.  I'm sure you will be in excellent hands (even if they are robotic).  Anytime items are forced in placed where they don't naturally belong its gotta hurt at least a little.  After reading every post on the subject I am a little more at ease with the cath thing.  I hope they use an extra small tube and not one of the garden hose variety.   That large diaper thing doesn't sound too cool but at least it wont' hurt, LOL except maybe a little humble pie. 

I've always been a car guy 2000 Viper GTS and 2010 Challenger RT Hemi.  I'm going to ride home in the Challenger because its much more forgiving with the bumps in the road however with a top speed of 185 the Viper would get me there a little quicker (only kidding i don't speed).  Be glad to discuss this experience.

06 GTO (last ever to be made) GM LS2 400 hp/tq. Fastest I've done is 148. Scary fast. Might have been on a track, might not, can't recall. smilewinkgrin
