I miss rising to the occasion spontaneously, and I miss not having the sword of Damocles over my head every 6 months, but other than that, not much. I'm relieved to be on the other side of treatment and doing well.
I still eat the kind of stuff you mentioned, even on Weight Watchers. Everything in moderation. I still have a beer most evenings, and sometimes a whiskey before bed. I've never smoked, so that's not a problem.
I start most mornings with a big omelet and about a quart of coffee. The omelets are usually pretty healthy (2% cheese, egg beaters, chicken breast, carmelized onions, shallots, etc.) but sometimes I eat whole eggs, too. Bacon, too. I just keep track of it all, and offset the excess in calories with exercise.
All that said, I do realize there does seem to be a link between excess sugar consumption, insulin, and some cancers (see the recent New York Times magazine for an in-depth look at this), and between obesity and aggressive prostate cancer, so I am mindful when I eat the occasional Krispy Kreme donut that it's a treat, not something I should eat regularly, no matter how easy it is to work it off later.
And even though we have the famous Heart Attack Grill not far away (whose obese spokesman recently died), I'm in no hurry to try the Quadruple Bypass Burger (8,000 calories, 600 grams of fat), Flatliner Fries (cooked in pure lard), Butterfat Shake, or other goodies they sell there. One of my co-workers did successfully eat the Quadruple. Crazy.
holy crap, i want to try it...
