Hi guys:

Just something I've been wondering about since Dad's first Lupron shot. He seems to be doing remarkably well (as far as how he feels). If you recall he had a rough time from his surgery in Feb. He had to wear the catheter for 6 weeks, 2 blood transfusions... it was a LONG road.

Anyhow, I believe it's been 3 weeks (maybe 4 I cant remember time flies) since his first Lupron shot. He's feeling great....... the doctor said it would make him calmer maybe a little weepy (he asked about these side effects as he heard this was the case for them). Anyhow, I've noticed a little irritability but he's not tired at all. In fact, the other day he mowed the lawn and tilled the garden.

Is this normal? I just want to make sure the Lupron is doing what it's supposed to -- I thought the Lupron would make him very sleep and depressed acting. I'm glad he's feeling better but we don't do another PSA test until August ------- gives us alot of time to worry about what's going on in there!!

after the first month the effects of the lupron were still pretty mild for me.  i've noticed that with other guys here.  some have hinted that they have dodged a bullet only to get smacked down later.  my wife used to follow a women's PC forum and one complaint the gals had was the husband's irritability and coldness.  side effects tended to get stronger the longer i was on lupron but i actually got closer to my wife during that time. each shot was like a cycle of SE...e.g., i would be irritable when the effects of the lupron were the strongest and ravenous.

hope that make sense.  lupron is some vile stuff and it does change you and wear you down.  i started taking celexa before my first shot to mitigate hot flashes.  i didn't have hot flashes or weepiness until my third shot.

I loved your doctors take on the verbage...little spin zone doseage...but bascially true. He might do and become a little different than you remember, lots of possible side effects, depression and crying are possible too...after you do it long enough. I won't go into all the possible effects, you should try to find out what is the plan???? Lupron for life, lupron for 2-3 yrs. (and vacation if you have 'good behavior'-humor added) and then if and when that might fail...what is the plan...or whom is his friend the onco-doc???? Yours to consider, sometimes the overall treatment resembles a chess game?

Most people can handle Lupron and its equals for a few years, some have done it a long time...must have tiger blood (navy seals dna). Best to you and yours, there will be days he might seem like somebody else.

Since your Dad got off to a bad start, it's time he caught a break.  Some men are not affected as bad as others with Lupron, and after 3 - 4 weeks, he should already be noticing some minor hot flushes and/or lack of energy.  I hope he is one of the lucky ones.  He needs to keep active, think positive and let Lupron do its thing.  If it will keep the PSA at an undetectable level (<0.05) for a year, then I would ask the Doctor for a vacation from ADT.  Then maybe he will be able to enjoy many, many months of being free from Lupron and all of its baggage.

My last shot of Lupron was in 3/07 and I've had a fair amount of time off, but with my PSA creeping up, I will probably start round 2 of ADT around the first of next year.  I was one of those that experienced every possible side effect known to the Lupron world so I envy those that breeze thru the treatment.  I hope your Dad continues to remain positive in mind and spirit and I wish him the best.

most true.  i would be loathe to go on lupron again but i would if it extended my life.  i don't have to like everything i do cool .

I recently had my 2nd Lupron injection and my side effects have been eating everything in the refrigerator. I have gained 25lbs in about 5 months. There have been mild sweats as well as moderate depression. Cymbalta has helped with the depression a great deal. After my robotic surgery my psa was .3 and I was started on Lupron. Since that time my psa has been around .03. I have recently started my radiation treatments and hopefully they will be successful. Best of luck to your father.
