What Myths Do you Encounter When it Comes to Discussing Prostate Cancer?

As one of the most under-discussed cancers, there exist many myths and misperceptions about prostate cancer. As I finished a blog entry today listing my 10 top myths and trying to provide some clarity (http://mynewyorkminute.org/?p=1418), I realized I might have just covered the proverbial tip of the iceberg. This led me to wonder what other myths are circulating out there? Does anyone have a favorite I didn’t include?

i think it's the other way around. The myth is that having surgery will cripple your sexual and urinary functions. In reality, with great advancements in technology, early detection, given the proper physical background, and in the hands of a great surgeon chances of minimizing those quality of life issues is greatly reduced compared to 10-15 years ago.

The myth is that robotic surgery decreases the risk of ED and urinary problems. There is no evidence that this true.

"Prostate cancer screening with a PSA test is no longer needed" (Plenty of primary care doctors believe this)

"A diet of (fill-in-the-blank) will prevent you from getting prostate cancer or keep it from spreading if you have it"

"A PSA of less than 4.0 ng/mL means you do not have prostate cancer."

"Prostate cancer is a 'good' cancer and will not kill you."

"Treatment for prostate cancer with radioactivity increases your chances for getting other cancers like leukemia."

"If you have joint pain, pain in the groin area, or pelvic pain, the prostate cancer has spread."

"Prostate cancer is far less common among men than breast cancer among women." Fact: 1 in 6 men get prostate cancer; 1 in 8 women get breast cancer.

You spend less time in the hospital with DaVinci - Not me, I was there 5 days total.

DaVinci is great for ED and Incontinence recovery - Not when they take both sets of nerves, and you still sop pads after 18 months.

As my (now ex) GP stated prostate cancer is the best one to get ??????
And he stated that there are no side effects from Adt/ht...????????
think he needs a little reeducation.
