Scary news. . My PSA began to spike over the last few months and this week after CAT and bone scans I received the dreaded call from my oncologist. CAT scan of the pelvis showed a lesion on spine and a lesion on pelvis both worriesome for metastatic disease. I have an appt. at Sloan in two weeks and I'm trying to get an appt. with Snuffy Myers in Va. later this month. I'm shaking in my boots. I was really hoping to enjoy quite a few more birthdays but this developement has really put me in a funk. My oncologist said that I will probably be put on HT and Zometa and this creates an additional problem as I badly need several dental extractions and as I understand it the Zometa would put me at high risk for osteonecrosis. This is a very low point in my journey. Any advice or feedback would be very much appreciated.

I have a similar history to yours and am about to start HT. I started Casodex 2 weeks ago and will get Lupron shot next Tuesday.

It sounds like you have a good plan to see Dr Myers and Sloan.

I am confident you will have many more birthdays and will find a way to beat this thing back for a long time - just as I plan to do. Hang in there and stay positive.

Sorry to hear about your bad news, that would be a tough pill to swallow. Hoping you and your doctor(s) come up with a good plan for you, and can get a handle on it.

So sorry to hear this news. There are options for you. I agree with Tim you have a good plan to meet the wizards of PC Myers and Sloan. Please keep us posted. Im sure others that have been there before will chime in shortly.

Don't close the curtain yet you still have much life to live.

Your plan to see Dr. Myers and go to Sloan is the right plan. Hopefully they can come up with the right treatment plan for your situation that will give you many more enjoyable birthdays.

Seems like this would be the time to step up the dental work and get it out of the way as soon as possible. It's maybe a tough blow, but things haven't turned south yet, hang in there.

I just wanted to chime in with my support. You've been on my mind this past day, and I'm so glad you have a good team to help you. If anyone can help you enjoy many more birthdays, they can, and I'm sure they will.

Jim, sounds like you have a good team to work with and a plan to deal with this.

But I came to give you a little info about the dental-Zometa connection.

My wife has a cancer that attacks the skeletal structure. She has been on and off Zometa for the last 5 years. She has also needed dental work over that time. When she does, she just has to go off the Zometa for a month or two, get the work done and then she can go back on it. To date she has not had any issues because of this.

Oncas, I am a patient of Dr. Myers. and I also see an oncologist at Dana Farber. I would have gone to MSK, but it was just too far from my home (NE CT). I think that your plan is the best that you can do at this point and wish you the best of luck. It took me a little over 2 months to get an appointment with Dr Myer, and I needed much of that time to put the information togther for the consult. I must tell you that it is very comforting knowing that he is in your corner. BB

Many thanks for all the feedback and advice. This forum is an incredible resource and the support that you guys provide is beyond description. I had a long and valuable discussion with my radiation oncologist yesterday. Bone mets are a very scary and serious presentation of our disease. The news is a serious blow to your attitude at first. You reel a bit. Many of us have had this disease as part of our daily lives for years. We learn to accept the less than favorable news and keep moving forward. I know that my situation is very serious. I also know that bone mets are treatable and survivable. You guys are absolutely correct. Finding an expert team of doctors is number one on the list. Maintaining a very strong will to live is just as important. I intend to satisfy both requirements. Mets be darned .. let's roll.
