Catheter Leaking Excessively

I had significant leaking around the foley cath, due to bladder spasms (primarily), and not all catheter tube diameters are a perfect fit. I also made the error of trying to "reposition" mine - wound up on pain pills for a day. You are moving a balloon in you bladder if you do manage to move it, which will cause a lot of irritation (and pain). I had to wear an adjustable diaper over it for the leaks, and was wet a lot.

If you just moved the tube up to reduce the pull, I suspect the movement may have just loosened up the "fit".

But as always, call your uro/surgeon's service and ask anytime (day or night) that things are not as expected.

As you probably know, the Ductal Carcinoma diagnosis is pretty rare.  Its clincal course can be somewhat different than the more common "acinar" tumor.  Many urologists and oncologists have probably never seen a ductal carcinoma of the prostate.  So, once you get past the recovery from surgery, I suggest you consider follow up with a sophisticated prostate cancer oncologist.  I would ask questions such as whether any adjuvant treatment is warranted and whether future monitoring should include any tests beyond PSA (such as, for example, CEA or PAP tests, or any scans).

And your cath situation is like one I had - should have asked if the bag was working at all. With mine, the valve clogged up several times, and the tube filled (nighttime floating dreams, anyone?). I got adept at shaking and inverting until it opened up at 3 a.m.

If you have used your "backup" bag, I would ask for another one, just in case.

Me again,

I went in to have my  bladder filled with contrast agent last tuesday and checked for leaks. If no leaks, the catheter was to come out. I guess it was inconclusive. He said he didn't think it was leaking. He was going to show to my urologist. I noticed in the next couple days that some small dark "chips" came out in my bag. I told my urologist and he didn't seem concerned. I have an appointment with him this coming thursday.

Since then, the small chips became skinny dark thread like objects and since then those dark thread like objects have become larger, thicker and instead of coming out occasionally, they are coming out all the time.

I get moments, several times a day actually, where the desire to urinate is almost painful, I go to the bathroom and hold onto my penis, then one of those things comes out and is followed by a small amount of urine.

I sent my urologist a fax thursday explaining but he was gone till today. Last night I photographed the stringy things inside my bag and wrote a letter to go with the pic where I described all  the above. I had my daughter take this letter and photos to his office today. I called this afternoon and he, the urologist, called me back. said he needed to " see what my urethera is doing, but he is at the mercy of the radiology dept.? He said he saw the photos and to just keep the appointment on thursday and he would decide what to do at that time.

I am nervous, again, this doesn't seem right. Have any of you guys experienced anything like this?

I am 55 Years old.
I was diagnosed with Ductal Variant of prostate cancer.
Gleason was 8.
My local urologist would not perform surgery, said he was not qualified and would "mangle" me.
I found a urologist down at UCLA who performed the surgery.
Pathology came back with negative borders.

Thaks for writing. Thanks for sharing  yours and your husbands story with me.

I am glad your husband is doing so well, though I am sorry to hear about your rectal cancer.

Even though I knew going in that I had the ductal variant, my pathology after my intitial radical prostatectomy showed negative margins so I was sort of hoping I was finished for a while.

As it turns out, my PSA is climbing a year after the surgery. It is still pretty low, .27, but it is going up so we are going to go for radiation and probably hormone therapy. Like you and your husband, everything they tell me right now is not all that encouraging but what are you going to do.

I am 57 right now and I have my intital radiology consultation next week. I am not at all looking forward to the hormone treatments again, but if it keeps me going, I can put up with it.

That is all I can think of right now, I hadn't been to this forum in quite a while so I thank you for writing which had given me the chance to reconnect with this group.

Having someone to share your thoughts with that is going throught the same or similar thing is very helpful so I will be back again. Please don't hesitate to write if you need to share or have questions.
