 I am currently in my last stages of hormone therapy.  My first psa since my diagnosis in June 2010 is scheduled for Oct 2011.  My treatments began with 28 treatments of radiation, followed by implanting radioactive seeds( brachiotherapy), and finally four hormone shots over a 9 month period.  My problems are hot flashes, burning while urinating, lack of sex drive, and urgency to urinate.  I am currently on Flowmax, which seems to lessen the burning, but my question is can I expect my conditions to improve?  When?  My moods are usually lower than usual and I hope someone might shine some light on these topics.  My urologist tells me to be patient that these things will improve-but I am skeptical.

I had seeds implanted and had some burning and frequency/urgency, but after 6 weeks the symptoms subsided. I can't tell from your post, but it seems as if it's been 9 months since your seeds were implanted. I did find that taking acetaminophen, along with the Flomax helped with the burning/frequency/urgency.

the drug pyridium really helps with urinary burning issues, works fast, and is cheap to buy

Angus, I know I'm not answering your question, but if you don't mind I have a question for you.

Being a GS-9 what was the reason you chose radiation then seeds, instead of longer treatments of radiation? My Doctors strongly suggested 44 threatments of IMRT along with horomoes for a couple of years.  Just courious.

bert -- the combination approach delivers more radiation to the prostate.  alot more.

Angus -- i had the same treatment but in this order:  9 months of lupron, BT and then IGRT.  my last shot of lupron was about 12.5 months ago.  i now feel "normal" but a little different with no aches or pains.  when your testosterone comes back you'll feel like the incredible hulk...you'll see cool .

Thanks all-especially the part about feeling "like a bull".  With my mood swings and lack of sex drive-that has really bothered me!  My oncologist  and I went with those treatments due to the aggressiveness of the cancer-it was in all 16 of my samples, and my relatively "young" age.  My mood swings are starting to diminish, I don't bawl at the drop of a hat anymore!  I will breathe a lot easier after I see my PSA score on October!
