Inguinal hernia. That's a condition in which a part of the intestines pushes into the groin or scrotum through an abnormal opening or weakening in the stomach.


I'm thinking lucky me has this but am a bit uncertain. I've been reading on www.webmd.com and think that if I do have a hernia the following would fit me.



"If your hernia does not bother you, you may not need to have surgery. Waiting to have surgery does not increase the chance that part of your intestine or abdominal tissue will get stuck in your hernia. Waiting will also not increase your risk for problems if you decide to have surgery later. If the hernia is small and painless and it goes away when you lie down or you can push it back into your belly, you may be able to wait."



Sitting here typing I feel a small/lite dull pain where the hernia would be. It's been there for about a month now. I know its not a groin stain since I've that many times over the years. I also don't think I can feel any myself....From my reading, I was seeing that many of there hernias can be felt and even pushed back in.



I'm sure it's unrelated, but five years ago I had surgery for:



umbilical hernia, part of the small intestine passes through the abdominal wall near the navel.



I know many of you have been down this path.. Any words of wisdom?

I have had inguinal hernias on both sides. In each instance I lived with the condition for several years until it got to the point that it needed to be repaired. You will know when that time comes, I believe.

I had each side surgically repaired, first on my right side, and then 6 years later, on my left. Each time it was done via "open" surgery, but on an outpatient basis. I took lortabs painkillers for about a week after each surgery. Total recovery for me took about 4-6 weeks to get back to normal physical activities. I had no complications either instance.

To be sure, a quick check by your family doctor should determine if you do have an inguinal hernia, and if so, what your options are. I put mine off until it became so bothersome that I knew they had to be repaired. My last repair was several years ago and I have had no problems since.

i had inguinal hernias on both sides as well. One side was troublesome, i.e. dull ache while the other did not bother me in the least. Actually did not know I had that one until a routine physical found it. I had them both repaired on February 14th 2011. I was scheduled for my open prostate surgery and asked if they could repair them using the same incision. It took another surgeon but he got it done.
you don't want it to turn into some medical emergency whereby the intestine gets strangulated nor do you want it to hinder any physical activity. i did a fair amount of reading on the subject before i elected to get it done. yes there are a few commentaries about being able to hold off on hernia surgery but the vast majority speaks to getting it repaired. for me the dull ache almost became a constant irritation. find a good surgeon and get it over with.

Steve, got one of these when they aired me up for surgery and my muscle didnt gived enough and tore. Dull achy pain way worse when standing and a noticable mouse when standing. It was pretty bothersome for me so i had it fixed and have had no trouble with it since. My wife is a mri tech and has several people come in that had very large noticable hernias and were just living with them, honestly i cant imagine why. Tim

Steve: I had one develop after my open Radical. Left side only. It was fairly bid. Had it repaired with open surgery. It was just starting to bother me a bit so I decided to go ahead and have it fixed.

Must say I did have to take more pain meds than I expected to get over the surgery. I am glad that I had it fixed .. I am too active to have that thing bothering me.

Hi Steve,

I had a left Inguinal Hernia years ago before my prostate surgery and had to have it repaired twice. The pain i had as it got worse was like being prodded with a hot soldering iron from the inside, on bad days i used to wear a weight training belt under my trousers but over the hernia to hold it in place and that helped lots.

First surgeon did it the old way where they cut down into it and stitch it up in layers working back up towards the surface as they go and it was not long before it all popped again so a trip back to the hospital to see a second surgeon.

This time a gorgeous female surgeon ;-) decided to do keyhole and put a patch under the hernia using screws into the muscle wall after she had stitched it up from the inside. It worked perfectly after that and has never played up since.

But here is a funny for you though about my follow up appointment. This gorgeous female surgeon knelt on the floor while i had my trousers and boxers round my knees, she had my dick in one hand, my balls in the other and looked up at me grinning while telling me to cough and this was before my ED was too bad. I have never willed an erection so much not to start and my wife thought it was soooooooo funny as i stood there lol, ah well at least the repair worked ;-)

I had long suspected a hernia as I had the lower groin pain especially after exertion. The GP could never say yes or no and my urologist was more concerned about my high PSA when I met him. When I had the CT scan it confirmed the hernia but also confirmed that my belly fat had filled in the hernia. My uro said as long as that is the situation I am not at any risk and he doesn't want to operate.

My father, my brother, and my sons have all had hernia repair. One son at 12 weeks and another at 15 months. I guess it runs in my family and I expect someday to undergo repaur. My brother-in-law had a double repair 20 years ago and had the Canadian method using steel sutures and played 18 holes of golf the next day. Now they scope the site and use mesh.

My dad and older bro have both been repaired once or twice... And I do have more then my fair share of belly fat that neither one of them have...

I'm still uncertain if I have a hernia...But odds are it is.... I just have this low - dull "feeling" down younder in the place where a hernia would be...

I'll be seeing my surgeon in mid January for a testosterone follow-up and will have him check it out.

I have the same "symptoms" as you. Went to see a surgeon whose specialty is laproscopic hernia repair at the Cleveland Clinic.
He said "yup, you have a hernia. Don't worry about it unless you have the worse pain of your life. Go home and enjoy yourself." He also told me that he gets a lot of hernias' after robotic prostatectomy.

I may have it repaired, only because it is somewhat of a bother.

Joined the hernia club meself.
Got told by my doc today that I have an inguinal hernia, been put on the list for surgery.

It's starting to become bothersome especially after a nasty flu bout this week that left me coughing.

I had bilateral inguinal hernia repair last Thursday, less than a year after SBRT for PC. My PCP had noticed one hernia duringa routine physical (the same that brought PC to light), and scans prior to PC treatment confirmed his diagnosis. I followed the same path that I travelled for my PC treatment; lots of research and finding the best possible surgeon.

While one specialist didn't want to do a laporoscopic mesh repair ("the radiation must have distorted that area"), I found one of the absolute toppers in this field: David Chen (Clinical Director of the Lichtenstein Amid Hernia Institute at UCLA), who didn't find that an issue at all.

The outpatient surgery itself was uneventful (the right hernia was a pantaloon hernia), and recovery has been great. Photos taken during the procedure show healthy tissue in the groin area. Like during SBRT, I started walking a couple of hours after treatment and have been without pain ever since. I hope this information will help future patients.

There is apparently a bug in the forum software that picks up the date, not the year, and replaces the missing year with the current one. I see this happen often with very old posts.
