I recently read a note from a fellow patient named Richard. He closed by saying: "…always comforting to know one has companions on this journey…" He is right, of course. There is nothing more powerful and comforting than knowing that we are not alone and that there are other men out there who truly understand what we are going through. With more than 16 million of us worldwide, I can’t exactly use the word unique to describe us. However, I can say that every fellow patient and survivor I have met along the way, who is willing to share his story with others and help raise awareness, is nothing less than remarkable. They are helping to pull this disease out of the shadows where it has resided for too long.
Last month, I produced some video features of men who have had to battle prostate cancer. As I worked with them during the past few weeks, I realized that some common denominators of them all were: compassion, optimism mixed with realism, courage and a genuine sense of caring. I am fortunate to meet so many wonderful men and their families each year. I only wish it wasn’t for the reason that I do…
Richard’s comment made me think I should hare these stories of fellow companions on this journey. You can view them at http://www.pcf.org/ourstories.
Thank you all, remarkable men that you are, for sharing your experiences and shedding more light on this disease.
Wishing you all a 2012 filled with more health. — Dan
