Story on website of Channel 11 in Atanta...
This person is trying to promote prostate cancer awareness... but I dont see a concerted effort out there like there is with other cancers and worthy causes.

If anyone might be so inclined togive him a comment of support as a comment after his article.., dont let me argue against it..

Last year, while some were busy occupying Wall Street and others were cheering the St. Louis Cardinals to a World Series victory, nearly a quarter million American men were diagnosed with prostate cancer.

33,720 of them died.

My father was one of them.

According to the CDC (from their website):

In 2007 (the most recent year numbers are available)—

•202,964 women in the United States were diagnosed with breast cancer

•223,307 men in the United States were diagnosed with prostate cancer

That's 10% more Prostate than Breast. Yet there is far more awareness of Breast cancer. My hypothesis is for 2 reasons:

1) because breast cancer is so much faster of a killer, it has that emotional shock factor. Sort of like an airplane crashing and killing 200, yet more than 200 died that day on highways around the country, just one at a time so not as noticed or gut wrenching.

2) there is the false illusion that Prostate cancer can easily be cured. Why - because "cure" is often used to mean 5 year survival. Since Prostate cancer is a slower killer, people are said to be Cured of it when they really are not.

I can't tell you how many people told me something like - oh don't worry, that's one of the most curable forms of cancer. It was always said is a positive way to be supportive, but even so I felt compelled to clarify (in a positive way) how false that perception is. Hopefully through earlier detection and treatment we are able to swing the statistics to more long term survival. That's what awareness like this article can help accomplish.

PCa license plates are not available in Canada - Ontario has a Breast Cancer, MADD (drunk driving) and St. John's Ambulance under their "charity" logos.

LA doesn't have one, but I have already contacted my Senator to see what he can do to help us try to get one.

So fellas, Ladies.. we likely CANT stop the pca we already ahve, or help those who we've already lost...but we CAN impact the future... my son, your's.

Is there a level of interest by our members to perhaps icollectively initiate some type of program to alert the public about this disease and see if we cant try and give people an opportunity to cotribute towards the cause?
