Help finding a very experienced Prostate surgeon in east tn

Hello, I have not had a biopsy yet, but did have a psa of 4.1 and am having symptoms of enlarged prostate...I am trying to do research on surgeons in case I have to have a procedure and cannot find very much feedback on doctors in my area, could anyone give me any info on doctors in the knoxville, kingsport, oakridge area or anywhere near.

Be calm - Right yeah I know. Scary stuff. There is a lot of information you need to get first before you decide on any treatment plan. Other than gathering the information (scans, x-rays, oncologist, urologist) there is nothing you have to do right away. Once you have all the information than he can start deciding on treatment plan.

Be sure to come back here and let us know how things are progressing. their is a wealth of knowledge here that is staggering!

Bud, thanks so much for the reply, I do understand the I will have to have much more info. from test and so-on before I even know what kind of decisions that I may have to make...just trying to get an early start on things just in case things turn out the be the worst...thanks again for the repy...it is nice to see how much support and friendship that comes from something that no one want to deal with...bassmaster

bassmaster, Welcome. Where are you located, city wise? I am in Kingsport. The surgeon of choice for Kingsport appears to be Dr. James Herman at Urology Associates of Kingsport. He and another, newer member of the practice do them for almost everyone here. Mine was done by a surgeon who has left the practice, but Herman assisted. Herman did my brother in laws and he had a good result. The only thing is he is only now beginning to learn the DaVinci robot, so my only recommendation is his open surgery skills.

Dr. Joseph Smith and his group at Vanderbilt is the premeir DaVinci surgeons in the state. Once you leave Nashville, the skills of the robotics guys are just now catching up to the Nashville ones. Myself, I would hesitate to have DaVinci by a doc who has less than 200 or more procedures under his belt.

If I were in your shoes I would wait for the results of the biopsy and a good talk with my uro before shopping for a surgeon. You may even learn that surgery isn't the best option for you. That's assuming you even need an option other than another PSA test down the road.

Although I didn't go the surgery route for treatment, I would've chose Dr Chris Ramsey with Tn Urology Associates in Knoxville. Very highly recommended. They are two other very highly regarded surgeons in the same practice, Dr. Charles Reynolds, and Dr Lee Congleton.

Also interested in surgeons in Northeast TN. Kingsport here. Would also like to know of other people. Brother-in-law just died of untreatable prostate cancer after 5 years.
