As the number of men sharing their stories on my site (YANA - You Are Not Alone Now www.yananow.org ) kept growing to over one thousand, I knew there had to be a better way of handling the task of uploading and updating these. I didn’t know how to do it so I put out a call for help and the men who responded are acknowledge here www.yananow.org/aboutus.shtml#YANA-3

Mark Freedkin took charge of the project and put in countless hours to achieve the objectives. In this he was assisted primarily by Gary Petersen who also put in many hours and had some excellent ideas. Other men helped as and when they were asked to do so. The outcome of the project will make a big difference to the men who follow us in finding information that is helpful to them.

The first and, we think, most useful change is that the new data base is searchable by a number of criteria. This will help newly diagnosed men in particular get close matches with their own diagnosis to see what other men – and why, and what the outcome was. The new index is at Survivors Stories http://www.yananow.org/query_stories.php Please note that if you have contributed your story and bookmarked the URL address, this will have changed. Look for your story in the new index, click on it and that is your new address to be bookmarked. The old version of your story will be taken down during the week and will no longer be accessible after that.

The second aspect of the current changes is that the input forms for new stories and for Updates have changed. Any information entered will go directly into the data base and, after moderation, will be posted permanently. We are aiming to make updates posted immediately once we have dealt with security issues. If you have not put your story on the site go along to http://www.yananow.org/JoinUsForm.php

Those of you who have already shared your experiences but who have not updated your story, should do so now by going along to http://www.yananow.org/UpdateYourStoryForm.php. It is SO important to update your experience at least every 12 months so that newly diagnosed men get a clear idea of likely outcomes over time.

There will be more improvements on the site when we recover our breath.

I went and tried out the new search function by criteria and I think it's brilliant. It's made a site that was already extremely useful just so much better. Mark, Gary and you have just done such a great thing for all those people who are about to be diagnosed.

I remember 2 years ago when Paul, my husband, got his biopsy and I was feverishly researching prostate cancer how happy I was to find your site. Then when Paul got his results I spent many many hours trawling through 100s of stories trying to find just those people who had the same grade, age, psa as my husband. Now, a new person would be able to do this in 10 seconds flat!

You were the first person I emailed 5 years ago Terry - for info - when I randomly came across your story on the internet somewhere. You have probably long forgotten! But through your kind reply to my email at the time, we found the YANA site, and shortly afterwards this Healing Well forum. 

So glad to hear YANA is still going strong, and assisting so many. It was a great help to us in our early Pca journey,  as a source of accurate and genuine information. Great to know it is getting even better with regards to finding/search functions!  cheers, Lana :-)

PS. Actually it was closer to 5 and 1/2 yrs since I emailed you - how time flies!!

Thanks for the kind words. I just want to add one point.

For years I have tried to get the PCa organisations, like US-Too and the rest - to publicise the Survivors Stories section of the YANA site. None have done so, yet time and again I get people who have stumbled across the site (or perhaps entered "Prostate Cancer Survivors" into Google!!) saying how useful it was for them.

If you agree with this, can I ask you to spread the word through support groups or in any way you can that this resource is there and available for anyone with a computer?

Why have they not publicised?

Like so many others - I stumbled across YANA - it was and continues to be a go to place for me. I've exchanged emails with a few of the YANA members which was - and continues to be - very helpful in my fight against this crap.

I'll spread the word in every way I can

Just a reminder.

The new changes at YANA are terrific. Many anecdotal accounts but very useful stuff.

On a second note I just finished a 20 minute Skype video conference and it was great to see the site master Terry Herbert and wife again. It's amazing how the technology allows us these days a real time video call across the world. For those who don't know I'm in Vegas and Terry in Melborne Australia. The perspective on the screen is amazing too because you can't even tell he's upside down...

Tony is a knowledgeable man on matters PCa related, but he seems a bit of course on geography. Australkia is actually at the TOP of the world (and is ahead of the rest of the world, but for a few insignifcant islands such as New Zealand. Errr......the British used to imprison rebels, traitors and even some of their Royalty in the Tower Of London and I reckon a Tower might be the ancient equivalent of a penthouse. And what abour Rapunzel, imprisoned by a wicked witch until her hair grew long enough.... Seems your knowledge of history and fairytales might be as poor as your knowledge of georaphy, Tpny????

I like the new sight too.

You guys who enjoy the great Skype quality can thank my son in law. He has spent the last 9 months working as the senior project manager with Microsoft on the incorporation of Skype into the MS family. Skype was a German company that was purchased by MS last year and many of the changes are a direct result of my SIL's work. It has come a long way in quality in the last couple of years and will only get better. Skype will soon become the focal point for MSN messenger.

Something that will really improve the Skype picture is to use an external HD camera. I have a Microsoft HD 720p web cam that makes the picture and sound quality 100% better than the microphone and camera in my laptop.
