Davidg:
You've made some very insightful posts here.
I am in a field where I could easily get another job due to my experience and networking over a long working life. In fact, I retired from our local school system and then decided I still wanted to teach. I applied to 5 local places (colleges/universities) and got an offer from each one. In fact, the "interviews" were very social. I knew everyone from assorted math competitions (and I had also taught at some of these places previously as an adjunct). It was kind of like here is what we have what would you like.
But cancer is a different animal. My wife and I will be celebrating our 37th wedding anniversary. But with this cancer one suffers a LOT ALONE. That's the way it is. There are fears and emotions. If I expressed them a lot, I would not be much fun to be around. So, I use HW as nice sounding board.
As we see on HW, everyone handles things in their own way.
But, interesting comments about your working lives. Mine is somewhat parallel to yours. While I never had to fire people, I was in school administration. Our local public school has been an elite system. Our locale supported us greatly and passed every millage. about 15-20 years ago the State changed the funding mechanism. They abolished local property taxes and increased the sales tax. Michigan took in the funds and sent them out to the localities based on student counts. This was "fairer." A politically effective school system like Detroit, which did not support their schools, got as much money per pupil as we did. Eventually, times got tough and Michgan started making cuts. So, all of a sudden I had to make budget cuts and I suddenly had to say NO in a variety of circumstances. Administration was always challenging but the enjoyment eventually went as each year turned into a financial crisis for our top-notch academic District. That is one of the main reasons I retired and moved on to being a University Prof. In fact, I was Department Chair at my University for a year, but decided to just stay with the teaching.
So, I never had to fire people, but it got close as we had to make plenty of cuts.
I guess we do share some similarities. Does this kind of work cause PC?
