Are there any facilities on the west coast that provide color doppler ultrasound biopsies for prostates?

Here's an abstract that shows comparisons in biopsies using color doppler vs. standard targeted biopsies. Simply states 2.6 times more likely to find PCa using CDU and/or patient could be subjected to lesser numbers of actual biopsies using such technology. The master is Dr. Fred Lee whom has the most experience with this over a few decades now and he has some kind of enhancement added (I heard through the grapevine). Dr. Lee discovered his own PCa upon using this machine like 32 yrs. ago now. His protege here in Michigan years ago was Dr. Duke Bahn whom moved out to California.

  Friend of mine went in for CDU not long ago now, and Dr. Lee saw some areas (red showing up- for possible more blood flow activity) and so did biopsies on Rick K. accordingly and even though suspecious areas could have been cancerous, in Rick's unique case nothing was found on his biopsies, although he was detected back in 1995-6 era and decided upon ADT3 drug therapy per Dr. Liebowitz concept as his primary treatment. He has been rebiopsied 3 times over the years since 1995-6 and so far nothing is found, not claiming cured or such but his results are very noteworthy. (he has psa of 11.0 and 2 positive biopsies back then (2+3)=5 so on todays revision scale would be Gleason 6's).

Also in the Los Angeles area (Marnia del Rey) Dr. Mark Scholz at Prostate Oncology Specialists performs the procedure you're asking about.

I believe UCSF in San Francisco does this procedure.

At USC, Dr.Ukimura. He wrote an aricle, published in March issue of PAACTUSA.ORG, I think start on page 12.

In fact, I am one of his patients and tentatively scheduled to have the procedure done (without biopsy) in the next two weeks.

I think in addition to color doppler, the machine also does Elastosonography.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my question. You are very helpful. My first priority is to rid my notes of "typos" like bipsie. One thing I've learned is, "getting older is not for sissies".

Dr Scholz does color doppler but won't do biopsies. He referrs all suspicious patients to Dr Bahn for biopsy.
He says it's not worth the hassle, because urologists get upset that doctors other than urologists do biopsies. A turf war at our expense. There was also a lot of resistance to developing MRI guided biopsies, because they would have to be done by a radiologist.

I thought color was a biopsie procedure. If not, what type of biopsie does Dr. Bahn perform?

Color Doppler Ultrasound combines a normal grey scale ultrasound with a color doppler. The color doppler measures blood flow and the ultrasound indicates tissue change. When an area of tissue change also has increased blood flow it is indicative of a tumor.
A biopsy is simply a hollow needle that the doctor sticks into a suspicious area to take a tissue sample for analysis by a pathologist. The color doppler is used to better guide the needle to only suspicious areas.
Most urologists only use a grey scale ultrasound to guide the needle and some old time doctors just use their fingers to guide the needle (natural asperiated biopsy)

Your explanation revealed why I was confused. In some cases, I assume, the color doppler results can show if there is no further need for a needle biopsy. Otherwise the color doppler ultrasound is a more accurate method of guiding the urologist to the trouble spot. Thank you.

Both views are correct. If the doctor after viewing the images feels there are no suspicious areas he may not perform a biopsy. If he sees a suspicious area he will use the image to guide the needle to that area. In most cases the number of samples taken is less than a normal biopsy as only areas of concern are biopsied.

Urologist felt a nodule on my prostate durinig the DRE, and suggested a needle biopsy using an ultrasound (not color doppler)to find the nodule for sampling. That is next week and we'll go from there to treatment or no treatment options based on result of the biopsy lab results. He has 30 years experience doing this and is, himself, a six year cancer free patient. I have only a week since I learned my condition based on a PSA of 10.9 and no other symptoms. Have to put my faith and trust in him at this point. Treatment selection will be another set of decisions.
