Bill,
I just caught your posting. By the time you see my reply you will be starting your cleaning out the day before the surgery.
I live in Colorado and travelled to Orlando to have Dr. Patel do my RP. He is fantastic and they take great care of you. The hospital staff will take fastastic care and answer all your questions. Then the morning of your hospital release release they will have all the patients walking around the hospital wing (that place does not even look like a hospital) then do a group discussion before discharge. Ask all your questions, don't hold back. They will answer them all.
Take advantage of the educational class they offer the following Monday, that too is a good discussion.
You'll be able to walk around while reasonably concealing the bag, worry not. The grounds there are pleasant to walk on. I took the blue bag they give you and hung it over my shoulder from another strap. Let the catheter hose pass through the waist band of my pants and right into the blue bag. No-one ever noticed it and it was not a problem.
You'll be surprised how well you can walk around. Then once that catheter is removed you have to stick around for another 24 hours. The moment we had our freedom from that bag, we took advantage of being in Orlando and did float over to Disney property. No, wasn't ready for walking a park, but we did enjoy driving over the Animal Kingdom Lodge and had a very pleasant lunch while watching the wildlife. It was fantastic to have that freedom. Take advantage of the nice surroundings once you are mobile.
I know this is pretty late before your surgery, but if you want to talk, I'd be happy to hop on the phone with you on Monday. Just send me a private message and we can connect. I'm happy to chat and help give you any insights on the whole process with Dr. Patel, his staff, and process.
Best of luck on your procedure.
