I am twelve weeks out and feel that my rectum is irritated with worsening constipation.  I hope that this is temporary rectal irritation - have others had this.  My leaking is getting better and this is becoming my main issue (other than ED which is too early to fret about).  I just feel like my pelvis is not normal is any way.

What method did you do to remove the prostate? Surgrey or radiation?

Sorry - had roboticRP. Doctor said he to carefull scrape prostate off rectum due to adhesions following biopsy.  Margins clear,noeds neg, sem neg,  gleason 3+4, low volume etc.

Are you taking anything for the constipation like a stool softener? I would imagine that dealing with the constipation would help solve the rectal irritation.

Plenty of stool softeners for sure. You may just need extra healing time in that area, it varies too much from guy to guy. Hopefully you will see improvements soon. Also, if you are not, then for sure, don't over do things physically until you feel better in that area. Good luck.

I was taking stool softners for a bit after surgery since it was very sentivie down there. Also drank prune juice that helped greatly.

I had an ilus i.e. my bowels stopped working, as a result of anesthesia. It took a lot of walking to get things back working and I've been having a glass of prune juice every AM since surgery.

Thanks - I am using Senekot as necessary.  Just hoping this is all temporary and that my rectum heals  overtime.  Constipation, gas gives me the urge to dribble just when my incontinence is improving.

BillinChicago - we are on the same timeline. Similar path findings as well. My cath out 5/3. My surgery was 4/24. Im only doing two pads a day but my rectal sx and of course ED have got me severely depressed. My wife wanted to me to take lexapro but I didn't like the risk of sexual side effects (last thing that I need) and constipation. Taking cialis and/or Viagara daily. Getting some fullness and can get a 10-15 percent erection with stimulation that is very hard (sparks fly). I am hoping that is a good sign. Nothing spontaneous -nada.

If it were me I would have a discussion with the surgeon. In my case, I am on "daily for life" docusate calcium as a stool softener because I had serious colo-rectal surgery long before PCa. The PCa surgery and RT just made it all worse.

The key is that if I wait to take it until I need it, I will be making that decision in the ER. Talk to your surgeon. There may be a "maintenance" dose that will resolve your issues.

I'll second you 142 - talk to your surgeon again.

I had a internal hemorrhoid prior to IGRT and the radiation just made it slightly worse. The answer from my RO and primary doctor was, "lots of fiber and here's a stool softener if that doesn't work." I've had to adjust my diet and life style to make sure it doesn't flare up.

Hopefully it will get better for you as you heal.
