Can any type of surgery raise psa numbers?

My father-in-law has PC. With a Gleason of 8. Not sure of his other numbers. He had radiation and seeds in Aug of 2011 then had his six month psa in Jan of 2012 (psa 0.4). He went in for a psa test this July and the psa number went up 1.9.

He took the July psa 5 days after having surgery to replace two stents that were found to be starting to be clogged or partially blocked.

Also, I would like to add. He suffered from severe pain in his lower back and legs for about 2 months. He didn't do anything at first because he was so afraid that the "c" (as he calls it) had spread. We finally convinced him to see his primary to have it checked.

Well....that quack sent him to physical therapy and told him to put a heat pad on his back. Even though he knows his history of his original stents and his "c".
So after two weeks of physical therapy and even going to the chiropractor, my father-n-law could not walk more than fifty feet without pain and almost collapsing on ground.

We finally talked him into seeing his cardiologist. The cardiologist found that his stents (put in 15 years ago, but told last on average 10 years) were partially blocked and needed replacing (not really replaced but actually reopened and new stents put inside old stents). Actually, the dr had to put in one extra one, so now he has three.

Five days later he had his July psa.

My question....After 4 months of severe pain in the lower back and legs to the point of collapsing, having stents put in through a small incision above the groin area (I think it was done similar to an angiogram)....

1. Could all of this affect/raise the psa numbers.

2. How long should he wait for another psa? 1 month or 3 months?

3. Is going from psa 0.4 to 1.9 considered a big jump?

Would really appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, similar experiences.

The two doctors he needs to see are his radiation oncologist and perhaps a medical oncologist. The true cause of the back pain needs to be found. A bone scan will confirm if it's cancer. Usually, a PSA of 1.9 does not point to bone mets advanced enough to cause the kind of pain you describe...But it's possible...Some forms of PC produce very little PSA so that test can't be trusted as a reliable indicator. How old is this person?
