vacation after surgery

I was back to work in two weeks after my robotic. I sit in front of a computer all day. Doc said wait six weeks before doing chores around the house. The risk is a hernia before the muscles have all healed. I think two months post surgery would be fine. Of course, ask your Doctor. He or she is the authority.

My husband's surgeon recommended no flying for one month out from surgery (worry over blood clots). We're planning some vacation time (driveable) in about two weeks--I think the change of scenery will be awesome for both of us!

At two months out from DaVinci, I was able to make a five-hour drive, but it took almost nine hours because I could barely make it from one toilet to the next along the way. Even with pant & pads, when sitting in a car, it seemed that everything leaked constantly.

Looking back, getting on an airplane would have been a very bad idea for me. Worse for whoever might get that soggy seat on the following flight.

I was at three months out when they finally let me go to a lift limit greater than five pounds, due to some healing issues.

Sounds like a great idea to decompress regardless.

142 mentioned continence issues, which may come into play, but you won't know that until well after the fact. In any case, all but the worse is doable, and for those really impossible cases, (like 142) there's Cunningham Clamps, a plastic, padded device that will clamp off the penis and keep urine from flowing out. They would work fine for the time that you are inflight. A bit of an aggravation, but not one big enough to make me miss my Florida winters vacation in the sun.

At 3 months, 2/3 of RP patients are continent, (leak free, pad free) so odds are he will be fine.
If he is in the unlucky 1/3 group, pack some pads with you or get them there.
A vacation will be just what the two of you need.

When they take the cath out, you should have a great idea as to where you stand. When he yanked the garden hose out of me, I could start and stop the stream on command. Not good on laughing and coughing, but it got better on a daily basis. If you are worried about the trip, back off on the fluids for the trip and see how you do. I spent first week after removal of cath testing pads and drawers and driving around countryside as a test to see how I did.

At 5 weeks post Davinci, I loaded the truck and we drove 4.5 hours to Jekyll Island for a week. I played golf two days. I did everything I usually do except ride a bicycle, that one scared me. Honestly my worst problem was fatigue. Doctor told me to get in best shape possible for surgery and I didn't. that was my fault. Had no continence issues driving, but I did pee evertime I stopped whether I had to or not as a precaution.

Whatever you do, make that getaway a priority. You will have a great time. You both have earned it. If you drive through Georgia and see a redneck in a truck, it probably me, make sure to wave now, ya hear?

I forgot about my air flight to GFMPH last month and Alf just reminded me. On the flight from Chicago to NY we had a mechanical issue on the plane and sat on the tarmac for almost 2 hours. I got to the point where I had to use the toilet. We are not supposed to get out of our seats while on the tarmac and I told the flight attendant that I had prostate surgery and it gave me bladder issues and I HAD to get to the bathroom NOW, she said, fine go but be quick and I did and I was. One of the nicer side effects of RALP is I can pee and empty my bladder in under 10 seconds.

I was out in my RV two months after an "open" surgery with no problems.....buy your tickets before the price goes up !!

Things should be fine other than a need to wear Depends.  He'll know more as the departure time gets closer.  Fatigue was a major factor and a nap was needed.  Be sure Kegels are part of the therapy at the right time.  Have fun!

My husband had his DaVinci surgery on Oct. 9.  He is still  having some leg swelling, but support socks (and occassional use of a compression sock) helps.  He is using Depends Right Fit underwear (using several pair a day still).  Doc says it is ok for us to fly to Vegas on Nov. 15 and fly back on Nov. 16.  The flight is roughly 4 hours.  We always book the emergency row (extra leg room and even room to stand a bit) and sometimes get bumped up to first (miles rewards).  Doc says he is to stretch his legs and walk some each hour and flying will be fine.  I think a week or so of good rest in Fl. would be great for your hubby if there are no complications. Walks on the beach sound wonderful to me.  Talk to the doc- I bet he approves.
