Hello All:

My urologist prescribed Flomax post-procedure to make sure my urinary functions worked ok.  And, so far everything is fine with little SE from the meds.  He told me to stop after 2 months and, if everything works, discontinue forever.  If not, start taking again and he would extend my prescription.

My question is this for anyone who may have experience with Flomax:  When I stop taking it, do you recommend I stop cold turkey or ease off, e.g. take every other day rather than every day for a week and then stop?  My doc says "cold turkey" but I'm a little concerned that my system will have learned to rely on it by then and I may have a problem.  Anyway, any experience on this issue?

This is a bit different from you, but my doc prescribed Flomax for about a week following surgery. Maybe it was two weeks, I don't exactly recall. So I just took the pills daily until they ran out. It was hard to tell if it actually did anything one way or another. Nothing special happened when I stopped.

My doc prescribed them back in Oct. for the urgency and flow. They worked great, but he told me I wouldn't need them after surgery because it is prostate drug and I wouldn't have one anymore. Bottom line... I don't know. Take them if the doc said so and see if there's a benefit.

Hi Tudpock,

I took Flomax for the last five weeks of my radiation treatment. It takes about five days before you feel the full effect. I took it for three weeks post radiation at which time I stopped cold turkey. I have had no further need and I have noticed that my urine stream is stronger now than before or immediately after my treatment.

I did take it prior to being diagnosed with PCa. The emergency room physician gave me a two week supply to help with elimination of a kidney stone. Worked too! The kidney stone is what led to the discovery of PCa. Still haven't decided if that was lucky or not. ER doc said that Flomax works by dialating the ureter. You probably have noticed a drop in BP as well. Although I understand the BP drop is temporary and your body will adjust if you take Flomax long term.

I just had robotic surgery 2 weeks ago...I had been on flomax for 5 yrs for bph. Went off, day beforebsurgery, After catheter came out, I could not pee, went back on and have been ok for more than a week.....surgeon still wants me to get off....but I don't intend to go into retention again... Thoughts??
