I have had increasing psa scores for about 6 years/ Last 2 scores of 8.5 and 8.6. I have had around 6 biopsys (lost count) and no cancer has been found. Last feb. I had a saturated biopsy done at John Hopkins were they took 30 cores (no cancer). They have been finding a typical cells the doctors at John Hopkins feel as though i have a slow growing cancer. But possiblyn no cancer they say

One psa a few years ago was 7.9 and the following one was 3.9. I am 53yrs old now. never had urination problems till the saturated biopsy. Any thoughts?

If you have the psa scores of the last 6 years post em. also how did John Hopkins explain the lack of cancer with that high a psa and saturation biopsies?? I t baffles me . John Hopkins is topnotch. stay close to them on this.

Maybe you just have a big prostate. Could be you're normal number.

Just a couple of random thoughts.

Not that many years (when I was working) I had a customer  (we did business for over 15 years)  who had a PSA that would vary from 10 to as high as 20......he had many biopsys ,some were saturation...all done at UCSF by Shinahara ( a recognized expert) and they never did find any prostate cancer nor infection...baffled the h@ll outta everyone !!

There are a small percentage of men who simply have a naturally high PSA level who are never diagnosed with prostate cancer..

Perhaps John T will check in and detail his case to you, or just do a search of his threads.. He had multiple biopsies but they were just looking in the wrong place...

PSA history (approx.)

45=3.2 biopsy no cancer with A-typical cell

2nd biopsy 1-month later no A-typical cells found this time

46= 3.0

48 = 3.6 biopsy no cancer

49 = 3.9

50 = 4.7 biopsy no cancer

51= 7.9 biopsy no cancer with A-typical cells

2nd biopsy 1-month later same results

51 1/2 = 3.9

52 = 8.5 saturated biopsy with 30 cores no cancer with A-typical cells.

53 = 8.6

next psa feb. 11 2013 if psa does not drop John Hopkins will be doing a mri guided biopsy, all though doctor does not expect this type of biopsy to make a difference since they took 30 cores last time. He actually said to me he doesnt know what else to do. I have asked him to just take out my prostate, I have a 11-year old son and I dont want to wait until (if there is) cancer escapes my prostate. Was told that would be unethical.

Hey John - welcome to the site...

Your story sames about the same as a good friend of mine. His 4th or 5th biopsy eventually found cancer.

You might just have to hang in there and see where things lead you. It could be many many years before you need to anything.

No cant find anything regarding free psa, I am being watched closely by the docs at Johns Hopkins. They have said the reason that they think I might have a small sloww growing cancer is not only because of my psa reading but because of the A typical cells they are finding and more importantly what glands they are finding the A typical cells in. Im just getting tired of psa testing and biospys I wish they would just take my prostate out and get it over with.

John,
Was your saturation biopsy a trans perennial or trans rectal? This makes a large difference in detecting anterior tumors as a trans rectal biopsy is poor for anterior tumors.
There are tons of men with a PSA in your range with no cancer. PSA leak usually stabilizes at some point and when talking to Dr Bahn, the best diagnostic Dr for PC, he says he has had a patient with a PSA of 40 with no sign of cancer for years. A close friend has been seeing Dr Scholz for about 4 years with a psa of 10 with no sign of cancer. So don't assume you have it. A PCA3 and free psa will help and should be given. A multi parametric MRI or a Color Doppler ultrasound are also recommended.
Prostate cancer is most always indicated by a slaw and steady rise in psa that is consistent throughout the years. Yours seems to jump around or remain steady which is indicative of other causes.
I went through what you are going through for 10 years with 13 biopsies. Only a color Doppler biopsy found the real source of my psa rise.

Actually, a place like Hopkins? I am shocked they would not do a fPSA test and especially a PCA-3 test.

Please inquire about that.
