Hey folks, a relative of mine just went through surgery and his pathology report was not the greatest showing extension outside the capsule. His psa going in was aprox. 30. His uro is heading him towards ht immediately and i would have thought radiation would be in order first. Anyone have any insight on this? Thanks Tim

Hello, the information is pretty sketchy.
What is his age and current PSA. What is the Gleason score?
What country does he live in?
Radiation first sounds reasonable. Often they do radiation plus HT for aggressive cases to get an added punch against the cancer. Good luck.

Hes 60ish, gleason 7, living in the good ole usa. Info is alittle hard to come by. I have been fortunate to have no recurrance but i know many of you have had to have multiple proceedures and was curious what you thought.

If his docs plan to do both adjuvant RT and HT then the hormones usually start right away but they wait for continence to return before starting the radiation, which can tend to retard recovery of continence. That way, while they wait for the surgery to heal and continence to return the androgen blockade is in place to keep any remaining cancer bottled up until it can be nuked.

My understanding is that they usually don't want to wait more than 3 to 6 months before starting the adjuvant radiation (if that is what they propose to do).
