How long do side effects last after last HT injection?

Good morning everybody,

I hope Easter was kind to you all.

My husband has his last shot of Lupron at the end of November last year.  They were administered every four months.  We were wondering though, how long do the side effects last after the end of the therapy (e.g. hot flushes, weight problems, ed, etc).   Should he be starting to feel some change in these soon?  He had a particularly bad night of hot flushes last night.

I had read somewhere that sometimes SEs can stay around for months.  What are other blokes experiences?

My hubby had his last 4-month hormone injection in November, 2011. The main side effect he suffered were intense hot flushes, and he still has them very infrequently.  His urologist told him that the effects of the hormone tx. would probably last at least 1 year after the last 4 month injection period had passed, and that has proven to be true in his case. 

The good news is that his PSA is still undetectible!

If he had his last four-month shot at the end of November then he should be starting the testosterone recovery process more-or-less now. That process is quite slow and the side-effects of the HT can linger for months. One study I read found that from the time the HT treatment ended the median time to testosterone recovery to within normal limits was 11.7 months (almost a year). His side effects should fade gradually over the course of months and should be mostly gone by this time next year.

it took me about 9-10 months to begin feeling normal after getting my last 3-month shot of lupron.

I had my last 3-month shot 4 months ago. I don't feel any change yet. I take Avodart, and this will delay
my testosterone recovery.My doctor's estimation- 6-9 months.

I had my last shot on 2-4-13 (Lupron) and my last Casodex on 3-9-13. I am having less hot flashes, but my URO & RO said it will take 9 to 12 months from the last shot for SE's to go away or what will be your husbands new normal. I cannot wait for my T to come back so I can have the energy to workout again---- darn 35 pounds of weight gain!!!

I am approx 7 months off of zoladex and have found the following......Libido returned within 4 months ......hot flashes are zero.....depression as now gone,self treated with amino acids brazil nuts for selenium.I always avoided weight gain using intensive cardio excersise......rowing cycling Ect.....however body mass has changed considerably over the two years of ADt.....my muscle mass as deteriated mainly in chest arms and thighs.Strength as gone along with this.Bodily hair is returning with a vengeance lol.Dizziness is still apparent most afternoons and I still experience a dry mouth and a type of numbness in my lips...( would love to know if anyone else as experienced that se ??) on a low note my PSA as rocketed and is above 40 at the minute.I know I need to get back on treatment but to be honest I've been enjoying living rather than just being alive and Im reluctant to get another hormone shot.

Thanks to all who have responded so far. My husband managed to avoid weight gain by daily gym work and strict (healthy) diet. (Although we did sneak in a few chocolate Easter bunnies).

His main problem is the hot flushes which are exacerbated by the fact that we live in the tropics. And of course, ED.

It is good to have a timeline of sorts. I think he imagined that once the Lupron wore off in the next few weeks, he would be back to his pre HT, pre High Dose Brachy and External Beam self.

Also, what sort of things should be expect in relation to PSA? Should it stay fairly low as it is currently now doing? I know from my husbands figures re Gleason 9 in nearly all cores that it is not an enviable position, but he is feeling quite ok, and quite laid back about it. ( I wish I was!). If there is to be a rise in PSA when might this be noticeable? I ask the specialists similar questions, but they try to evade answering.

I was on ADT3 for one year after SRT. For me SE mostly hot flashes and libido took 8-9 months to recover from. I am 18 months out from the end of HT now and my T is still just under 400, and seems to be leveling off. Good news is that PSA is still undetectable. I am taking Avodart and suppliments combined with medit. diet. I hope to keep PSA undetectable for 4 years or more.
