Fever following open surgery!!

I loaded him up in car about 1am n took him to ER. They did a ct scan n found out that he has a large abscess where his prostate was. It is 3am we r waiting for uro to come to er. Either surgery or needle drain the abscess. His blood pressure is really low n because of the sepsis his other organs r shutting down too. I will keep u posted.

Oh Allison, how scary this must be! I pray that you'll come back and tell us that your husband is on the mend, and feeling better. Sepsis is serious stuff...you did the right thing hauling his butt to the ER. Sending you both hugs and kisses, and prayers for quick healing.

Thoughts and prayers from me as well. I have been through a bout of sepsis .. very, very serious stuff!

My husband had sepsis. He had a test done by a urologist with an infected catheter and got a rare, triple antibiotic resistant infection. His fever was 104 and he could not urinate when I took him to the ER. In my husband's case, culturing the bacteria to find the appropriate antibiotic was needed to turn around the infection and the sepsis. He was very, very sick but got better.

I will be thinking of and praying for your husband.

Good move to er. with that high temp. You used the word sepsis in your second post, so I assume he was diagnosed with sepsis at the ER. When you mentioned Abcess and a possible lancing and draining, a lymphocele came to my mind. I guess there is no difference and that both can result in Sepsis. Its good you listened to your gut and the ER respond well. edit 558 hst I see from your signature 12 node were negative, they were probably removed which could caus a lympocele, which could cause sepsis, but i am not a doctor, but an opinionated lay man. It actually is a bump in recovery, and will be remembered as such , Im sure

Resident of Highland, Indiana just outside of Chicago, IL.
July 2011 local PSA lab reading 6.41 (from 4.1 in 2009). Mayo Clinic PSA Sept. 2011 was 5.7.
Local urologist DRE revealed significant BPH, but no lumps.
PCa Dx Aug. 2011 at age of 61.
Biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma in 3 of 20 cores (one 5%, two 20%). T2C.
Gleason score 3+3=6.
CT of abdomen, bone scan both negative.
DaVinci prostatectomy 11/1/11 at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), nerve sparing, age 62.
My surgeon was Dr. Matthew Tollefson, who I highly recommend.
Final pathology shows tumor confined to prostate.
5 lymph nodes, seminal vesicles, extraprostatic soft tissue all negative.
1.0 x 0.6 x 0.6 cm mass involving right posterior inferior,
right posterior apex & left mid posterior prostate.
Right posterior apex margin involved by tumor over a 0.2 cm length, doctor says this is insignificant.
Prostate 98.3 grams, tumor 2 grams. Prostate size 5.0 x 4.7 x 4.5 cm.
Abdominal drain removed the morning after surgery.
Catheter out in 7 days. No incontinence, occasional minor dripping.
Post-op exams 2/13/12, 9/10/12, PSA <0.1. PSA tests now annual.
Semi-firm erections now happening 14 months post-op & VERY slowly getting a bit stronger.
