Thanks for the laugh, Jim! Our son was involved with the in-house video team at the Red Wings home arena. So, we have a fairly personal connection with the team (well, in addition to living there for 30+ years).
In other news, I've found some info that moderates the drive for casodex with Lupron. Here's one study that indicated casodex didn't make a significant difference in a large-scale retrospective study regarding suspected "flare" induced symptoms:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19962733
From another online document about
Lupron, the T flare is about
50% for the first couple of days, dropping back to baseline level at 1 week, and down to "castrate" levels in a little over 2 weeks. Here's a link to the article: http://www.rxlist.com/lupron-depot-drug/clinical-pharmacology.htm. The big unknown I guess is how much the cancer cells would respond to the increased testosterone for this short period.
In that article there are javascript
popup graphs, including a serum testosterone chart for the 3 month depot upon injection. There is a lot of daily variation in people's testosterone levels naturally too.
Finally, SteelGuy the document about
severe flare events is actually pretty much a grant request, to gain approval to study this. So, they would naturally make a severe statement about
the potential problem. I'm just not sure that's a real convincing article for my physicians. There is nothing but a gray sea of uncertainty about
this disease....
I still plan to talk to my medical oncologist today about
this, but I can see why the other doctor's experience could indicate casodex isn't as "mandatory" as it is perceived by some.
