What should be the discussion content of HW?
The forum should be a "big tent", welcoming topics of support, research, personal experience and PCa public health issues (even if controversial). - 96.0% - 48 votes
The forum should focus more narrowly on support topics, with minimal discussion of research and PCa public health issues. - 4.0% - 2 votes

I'll vote Big Tent.
I'm uncomfortable with a separate advocacy section. We have enough sections.
Some of you still seem to be missing a basic point:
You can always skip stuff that doesn't interest you.

Incidentally, the voting results are quite clear...and unanimous!

mel, it does seem clear, no one is asking for a new HW PC, or splitting HW PC into two entities. Even the greatest organizations in the world need tweaking from time to time, all part of the normal evolution of things in my opinion.

It seems to me that the problem is that the Prostate Cancer forum IS already one big tent. It would be helpful, though impractical at HealingWell, that the forum be divided into subforums, the way many Internet forums are. In the meantime, caveat lector and civility may be helpful.

Tim G: you bring up a good point actually. At one of my fave personal forums, related to Lincoln motor cars, it has a general forum, but has many "rooms" to segregate it into subjects. There is a room for MKS owners like me, but also a MKS Ecoboost room (which I don't have), etc. I simply don't engage in the rooms within the forum that are of no interest to me personally.

It's worth mentioning, I think, that the Prostate Cancer forum is a room in a larger edifice called HealingWell.com. One proposal being floated is to open a new room right next door where we can engage in some of our noisier activities. I don't see that as censorial. It is liberating instead. It would be like a separate room in a restaurant where one can hold birthday parties or political rallies without bothering the other guests. It is true that you can have a birthday party in a restaurant if you sit quietly in the corner and don't sing too loudly. But what fun is that?

I'd love a restaurant where people aren't loud. Impossible here in Italy. I'd also love streets withOUT smokers, even harder here in Italy.
A politics board I used to frequent had sections divided up be geography. That was cool actually.

I voted for "The Big Tent".
Healing Well PCa is like a large library. You can take the book off the shelf and read it, if it doesn't interest you, put it back for someone else to read. I only read threads that interest me, but if I read one I don't care about, I exit out of it and look for another. I like all the choices we have here.

Big tent for me--No problem. This forum is well balanced with the exception of members who cast aspersions on other members--I agree with Ed, Casey, and John T that the personal attacks we have witnessed recently need to stop..If a member is dumb enough to not realize that "enough is enough" kick them off the forum. If the rules don't allow that now change them.

I voted for the Big Tent.
It's seems rather simple to me.
If you spin off another forum, then those insistent on debating their points will make a bee-line to that forum and become even less aware of the newbies that hit the front page of THIS forum. And, if I'm not mistaken, that seems to be some of the gripes around here lately.
Keep it all here and let grown men and women act like grown men and women with a little class and common courtesy for fellow members.
I'll be brutally honest here and state that much of what I've seen seems to be a whizzing contest. I've closed my eyes in fear measuring sticks would soon be broken out to start measuring .... never mind!
You can only fight "I'm right and you're wrong," for so long ,before eventually looking like part of the problem.

Hmmm.... I didn't call it a whizzing contest, but close ;-). Certainly agree though. I stated my opinion early on in this debate... It was the correct opinion and that's it

PeterD., I understand what you are saying. There probably should have at least been a none of the above option. { not putting words in your mouth} Do not feel it took away from the flavor of the post, my self, but then again I do like my own cooking, but invite seasonings from from others cupboards.

I don't see any "whizzing" contest, that almost sounds like a sexual stereotype. If every member only showed respect, common courtesy, and tolerance to one another, there would be hardly an unkind word said, and people could go back to debating politely and agreeing to disagree as it should be. No one here has a monopoly on the truth nor all the answers. It takes a group effort to see the whole picture.

"Big tent, but much less blathering "posts about other posts."
And, people who want to blog should blog...elsewhere."
Amen to that!
Of course the Big Tent.
This place has really changed over the years. It has become the personal playground of some and there is way to much back biting and passive/aggressive B.S. It is a pity. What should be a great resource has, to a large extent, degenerated into crap like this thread.

My apologies to the board. I certainly was not implying any sexual stereotyping.
I would hope that most of you folks know that was not my intention in any way.
Someone thump me on the head already!

MsWW - it was a perfect and appropriate comment on what's been happening. It's a "saying" that is applicable to all genders, even if not technically possible for all
and nothing to do w/stereotyping - in my opinion.

Passages, nicely put on you reply to MsWW. I heartedly agree with you. No harm no foul and actually brought a little levity to the conversation.

Sonny, never said it was a "foul". Different things offend different people. What is offensive to one, is nothing to another, very subjective.
Kind of funny how things are starting to work around here, in my post - people are concentrating on the least important part of the post, and ignoring or not commenting on the heart of the post.
This is what was really being talked about, aside from the "whizzing" remark:
"If every member only showed respect, common courtesy, and tolerance to one another, there would be hardly an unkind word said, and people could go back to debating politely and agreeing to disagree as it should be. No one here has a monopoly on the truth nor all the answers. It takes a group effort to see the whole picture."
Anyone want to see if they can make something wrong out of the main point of that post?

I've locked a thread for 24 hours before for people to cool off. It worked out great. Very positive discussion after the hiatus.
So, I'll see you in 25 hours.

Ok, opening it back up. I locked it because the thread seemed to be getting into too many personal attacks.
It's a worthy topic. Let's see if we can discuss it.

I think Peter intended to unlock this, so I'll fix that.

PeterDA, no problem re the lock. In fact, I think this 24 hour cooling off period is a good vehicle.
And, Sephie, no need to apologize to me...I think this poll and discussion had run its course anyway.

This is discussion has been useful. I think the "big tent" approach is what I have always envisioned with each of our forum topics. Sometimes when you piecemeal it out, the threads become confusing and you lose people. I hope this helps.
