Tropical Storm Andrea & S.E. U.S. HW folks

Putting  best wishes and hope to all our HW folks located in and round the path of Tropical Storm Andrea.

While not much of a wind storm, the heavy rains are already causing flooding and problems in its path.

As of midnight, the center was 50 miles west of Jacksonville, FL moving slowly to the northeast.

It will move into southern GA and then into eastern SC during the day tomorrow.

Here in western SC, we have already picked up 5" of rain in the past 24 hours, our basement sump pumps are beginning to lose ground to the rains, expecting a flooded basement and damage.

Hope everyone in this storms path will be safe and use caution, especially on flooded roads.

There are quite a few of us HW people in the south eastern United States.

Thoughts n prayers for our HW family and everyone in the storms path. I am in Idaho and the worst natural disaster here is getting snowed in. Or snow in July. Makes for bad Potatoes...lol. I have seen it snow here every month but August...crazy.

I live in the SC Lowcountry. Hot and muggy today and plenty of rain this week. I emptied my rain gauge this morning and it was topping over at the six inch mark. Tuesday when I emptied it, after a downpour the day before, there was two inches of rain. Many streets have been flooded but fortunately nothing bad other than a lot of rain.

Lots of rain this week down here in SE Florida. I thought it had finally stopped raining this morning. Went for my morning walk, GFMPH. Got about 1/4 mile and got dumped on, soaked.

Some tornado damage about 20 miles east of of my home yesterday.

Sunny right now. When I go for another walk today, I am bringing the umbrella.

Purgatory is right about "sunny-rain-sunny" in Florida. I live in Gainesville, which was more or less was right in the path of Andrea, and while yesterday (Thursday) was dark and rainy all day long, today is bright and sunny again. (Little damage here, BTW, just a big dump of rain).

Weather systems often move very quickly through Florida.

When we first got married, lived one block from Tampa Bay on the St. Pete side. You could almost set your watch late in the afternoon when the daily thunderstorm came from the bay. Be hot and humid and sunny, then, blam, all hades broke loose, then just like that, hot and sunny again, but even more humid as the fresh rain started evaporating off the roads like steam.

We are doing fine.  I know what you mean about Charleston.  We travel to Charleston frequently and make a point of staying away from the downtown area when we know there could be possible flooding due to rains or high tides.  Hope your daughter is safe. 

11 PM, thought we were all done in our part of the state, but in the last couple of hours, more bands are passing through our area, still dumping heavy rains. long as I don't lose the power, the sump pumps are holding. be glad when this is over with. living 200 miles inland, one wouldn't think this would be a problem from a small tropical storm.

i flew into the rain. While in Italy it rained every single day for the first 8 days. That is very weird in that part of Italy. News was all about changing weather patterns. I know my part of NJ and NY has seen some odd changes and its share of disasters in last few years.

I'm going to England end of month, watch it be dry and sunny. If it is, we know something peculiar is going on.

David, I always look to my cats to see how the weather will affect me. Low barometric pressure (such as we see with tropical storms, etc.) does affect our physical and emotional state. During the storm here yesterday (today the sun is out and the rain stopped early this morning), my 4 cats slept the day away. When a storm is approaching, they become lethargic (which is saying alot for cats!), and not interested in much of anything except eating. Dogs seem to react differently...years ago, we had a German Shorthaired Pointer who would get very antsy and would whine whenever a large thunderstorm or tropical storm was approaching. For those who suffer with migraine headaches, low barometric pressure can also trigger a migraine.

Just one more piece of useless information I have stored in my brain that I thought I'd share with you.

Sephie, not useless info at all. Good insight, never thought about the pressure part of what you said. We have 2 outdoor mostly cats and one dog (boston terrier), and I will have to start watching them with weather changes. We had a former dog, mostly outdoors, German Shepherd, that was terrified of thunder and fireworks and gun shots.

I think a thread on how weather, moon, etc and how it effects people could be of interest in the future, as its all part of our overall health.

Talking about tropical systems and houses, I've got something interesting to share. Probably be tomorrow though, I have to find the pics and scan them into the computer. I've been lazy these last 10 years. :-\

I had a little damage from Hugo when we lived in another house, nothing bad, mostly shingles and a door was damaged.

The photo in the link below, is what my current home is built of. My wife and I built this 10 years ago this month. Took us a whole year to do it. We did all the framing, we subbed out very little of the work, electrical with my help, drywall, plumbing with my help, roofing, brick and concrete work. I basically had a hand in every part of the construction. I was my own contractor.

Anywho, I built this using steel framing. It has true 8 inch exterior wall before sheathing and finish material.
So far (knocking on wood) I haven't had to test it against a major storm.
