Crowdfunding of Prostate Cancer research

I'd be interested in projects that are more detail oriented and specific vis-a-vis 40 year old men and the impacts of some of these new recommendations on them. Actually, I'd take anything regarding young men in PCa because everything posted and discussed is always lacking in that area. I know we only make up 0.6% of those yearly diagnosed, but if we're good enough to solicit they could start a project for us. MAybe you can put in a good word.

No problem. But I was interested in what you posted as one of my rolls is being on roster as a Peer Reviewer for the CDMRP and this post was on track, al bite, not allowed at HW, but on track with that effort. I edited my post accordingly. I think I will just do separate posts about new directions in treatment/diagnostic ideas that I would like to see investigated and encourage others to chime in. Maybe if we put our minds together, we can come up with some great new ideas. I think many breakthroughs in medicine start with people imagining how things could be. Such projects fill me with hope.

I request we all act like adults and get back to the real, and in my opinion, very valuable core of Allen's post.

That being the fact that federal money for research is drying up. With resources being limited, where do people believe research money should be directed? After all we have a clear and vested interest. Only DavidG has put forth the a suggestion that some element should focus on younger men. I agree based on the fact that I have three sons in their 30's and that my anecdotal observations appear that when PCa hits young it hits hard. Look at Tony, Todd, and others that were diagnosed in their 40's and there is some thread of high PSA and advanced cancer. Certainly better understanding risk factors in younger men is important.

Additionally, among my concerns would be to better determine which low grade cancers are not goiung to cause problems so the presumed overtreatment issues can be better resolved to preserve quality of life. Selfishly, I would like to see more money to find better ways to extend remissions and perhaps cures of high risk locally advanced cases like mine.

I am interested in reading more about the projects Allen refers to so that I can make a better assesment. While we are not here to fund raise, I do think we can offer one another ideas and resources that will help many people decide where they might consider sending any charitable dollars they desire to use. Not long ago David in SC was asking that very question in an enlightening and important tread. That is in no way soliciton.....rather it is information and experience sharing which are central to the mission of Healing Well, in my opinion.

In reference to the conversation these projects are all generated by the researchers themselves. If you read them you will see that some of them do speak to the issue of knowing which cancers are at risk for progression and should be treated ( needing Treatment PTEN biomarkers; A Genetic Signature to I'd Men with A Risk of Prostate Cancer Progression and Live Cell Prostate Cancer Diagnosis).

Most of the posted projects will yield information for all men diagnosed with Prostate Cancer no matter their age. There are also projects for survivorship for men if all ages like the project evaluating Qi Gong for diagnosed men.

There are projects that cover the spectrum of concerns for us men diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.

I do suggest that you go to the site and read the proposed projects.

Sorry for the long delay in answering, I have been overwhelmingly busy. Yes, I am planning on going to PCRI. I will not be there until late Friday night, but will stay in LA to Monday.

I am glad that you are going to be in a reviewer in the DOD PCRP review process. When I first started I was amazed with the program and what it does. I am telling you that as a consumer we can yield a lot of influence in the decisions being made. If you find that you are in disagreement with the other committee members they will listen to what you have to say and they do give it consideration. Be prepared to work VERY hard, but you will find the return is well worth the work.
