Well hoping all my Healingwell friends are doing ok,, Here goes my question. I'am having a Dilation of Urethral Stricture by passage of sound or Urethral Dilator.. What can I expect? Is there a hospital stay? Is it very painful? Once i leave the hospital will I have to have a catheter in me once this procedure is done? How long? How many days should I take off from work? Scared here.. Just feel like forgetting about the whole thing. Oh, doctor says I need this procedure done in order to go forward with my penile implant.. :( Joe..

If you are having it done at the hospital, chances you are being put under, and won't feel a thing. I have had several done in the past. And yes, you usually have a catheter in place for 1-7 days, to help keep the urethra opened after it has been dilated. Usually there isn't much pain involved when done this way, perhaps you will be a little sore while the catheter is in place.

I had 6 operations done for strictures at the bladder neck, and 2 emergency dilations, none of them were fun. In my case, my body kept scarring over quickly, making it impossible to urinate on my own.

I wish you luck, and hope they can fix your problem on the first pass.

I just had one done on 7/16, and it wasn't too terrible. Mine was done under anesthesia at day surgery, after checking the bladder and urethra via cystoscope. The bladder was clear of any polyps or tumors , but there was a slight amount of scar tissue built up that he dilated. I was very happy when I woke up to find no catheter in place. That joy didn't last long, as I started bleeding quite a bit when I went to the rest room to pee. In came the cathether and stayed with me for a couple of days. The Dr told the wife I might have to have it done periodically, only time would tell. I didn't have alot of pain, but took 4 days off work to heal. Definitely didn't want to go back while sporting the cathether.

I had to have several dilations and chose to have the "in office" procedure with the sounds rather than the surgical procedure.  I avoid hospitals and anesthesia when possible.  The actual dilation only took a few minutes and was very uncomfortable at the time the actual stretching took place.  No catheter was necessary.  I had to repeat the procedure several times but have not had any problems over the last few years.  Pop a couple of extra strength Tylenols before you go in.
