Hernia Following Radical Prostectomy

"There are various types of hernias, and the researchers, led by Dr. Hanna Nilsson at Umea University in Sweden, included femoral and inguinal hernias, which both occur in the groin, in their analysis.

They collected medical information from a Swedish national database on more than 28,000 men who had been treated for prostate cancer between 1998 and 2010.

Among them, nearly 15,000 had their prostate removed with standard open surgery, another 4,650 had their prostate removed in a minimally invasive surgery and about 9,000 men had radiation treatment.

The research team compared the number of hernia procedures among these men to 105,000 men who did not have prostate cancer.

Six years after the cancer treatment, 14 percent of men who had open surgery, 10 percent who had the minimally invasive surgery and eight percent who went through radiation ended up having a hernia repaired.

In comparison, just four percent of the men who did not have prostate cancer received a hernia repair, the researchers report in the Annals of Surgery.

The results translate to a four-fold higher likelihood of hernia repair among men who had open prostate surgery and a two-fold higher risk with radiation therapy."

I had a hernia repair during my prostate surgery. I figured as long as they were in there....
My uro said it added about 20 minutes to his day.

I read, at the time, that not insignificant percentage of those having prostate surgery have need for a hernia repair. I checked, after reading that, and have yet to hear of anyone else who had the two surgeries done together.

The doc told me is was actually a stronger repair because of where he was already working he was able to put the mesh on the inside. I sorta wish I'd done a precautionary on the other side too.

I suppose I should mention my brother. He had DaVinci surgery for T2 PCa. Three months later, while on the way to the dentist, he had to pull off the freeway in too much pain to drive any further. The dentist, my brother's best friend, made a car call and hauled my brother off to the hospital. They discovered that three feet of my brother intestine had escaped through a hole and was being pinched enough that gangrene was developing. Emergency surgery.

I had an inguinal hernia repair done at the same time as my RP on July 1st - it was done as an open procedure, not laparoscopically - apparently the laparoscopic version can't be performed at the same time as the RP. At 5 weeks post-surgery, I have no discomfort at all from the RP incisions, but the hernia repair site is still pretty sore - my doc said I may get slightly painful "reminders" for up to a year.

Still...I'm glad I took care of it when I did - I would not relish the thought of another surgery anytime soon!
