My trimix was recalled

Please if you find  anything new share it with us.  We usually do not expect bad things from our compounding pharmacy.  They do a great job for the most part.  However on occasion these specialized pharmacies make a mistake and we should all be made aware......but

It is interesting that we need to be aware of local compounders, Because.. when huge Pharmaceutical giants screw up with much more profound danger to zillions of customers.... ( almost no one ever knows)  Oh well...I guess it is about what we do and don't have control over.

Clearly they can't make any more meds until they pass any inspections required. I would expect that refunds in a case like this would depend on the outcome - if it turns out to be an acceptable error, they should have liability insurance. If it were worse, there could be prosecution involved, and that would tie things up. A situation like this could bankrupt a company even if the problem was an honest error, since that is likely the biggest part of their business.

In a same case I would get the doctor to reissue the prescription, notify the insurance company, and find another pharmacy for the time being, or just wait it out.

The contamination occurred at the manufacturing site and not the pharmacy itself. The manufacturer is in Cedar Park which is just outside of Austin. The pharmacy I deal with is "People's Pharmacy". Here is a local paper report on what happened.

"FDA representatives identified several concerns about possible contamination of sterile drugs, most of which are injected, during the inspection.
The company initiated a voluntary recall Friday of all of its sterile products — an estimated 50 drugs — after 15 patients at two Corpus Christi hospitals had blood stream infections. The patients had been injected with the company’s calcium gluconate product, used to treat low-calcium conditions.
The FDA is investigating the infections and has signaled the drug is the probable cause but has not made a final determination."

That seems odd, just today I tried to refill my script of Trimix and my compounding pharmacy told me they do not carry the mix anymore. I remember a lot of members used Francks in Ocala mail order. They have closed their doors, something about fungal being present in sterile injections. I hope this is not an indication of a bleak future for us using rocket fuel.

The state of compounding pharmacies may be changing after the 50+/- dealths from the NECC (New England Compounding Pharmacy) last fall. http://www.mass.gov/eohhs/docs/dph/quality/boards/necc/necc-preliminary-report-10-23-2012.pdf   There is a senate bill 959 that will be voted on soon.  I've been following it.  http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/113/s959 I've sent my senator a letter asking him to vote no when it goes to vote.  Here is where you can do that: http://mymedsmatter.com/ A compounding pharmacist sent me his take on it.  He's referring more to hormones but if the bill passes, it will affect BiMix, Trimix, etc. Here is his email: So far it means that the compounds, including pellets and any bio-identical formula, if prescribed for a specific patient, then shipped to the patient directly (to be used as a prescript ion at home, creams, gels and sublinguals) and then taken into the doctors office for insertion would still be allowed and no interference with the current system.  If a doctor insists on buying at the office level, in other words a quantity of pellets shipped directly to the doctors office for use in any patient as needed, then the pharmacy would have to file for the special compounding license and would be governed by the FDA, not just the Board of Pharmacy in each state.  Most pharmacies won't want to have this extra license and be inspected by the FDA as well as the Board of Pharmacy.  Doctors won't like that, because then they lose income and can't charge the patient for the pellets as well as the insertion fee.  This is how I interpret it so far, and I am also under the opinion that it will pass after the deaths of 51 patients since last Fall by NECC. Pellets are sterilized before shipping to patients and doctors, so they fall into the sterile category.   Hope this helps all of you understand the language so far as proposed,  I think it is almost a done deal.  So pellets will be available, some pharmacies will drop them, prices may go up, and some doctors will balk at it all and may even stop inserting pellets?  For Testosterone, the DEA may even get more involved?   Also, a new category of pharmacy will be established,  a Compounding Manufacturer, and the license fee to become one will be in excess of $15,000.00/year;  instead several hundred dollars a year.  So the number of pharmacies participating will dwindle greatly, in my estimation.
