Any bowhunters on here have RP?

Hi, I am just asking as I am wondering if I can return to my favorite hobby of bowhunting someday.

I can't think of any reason you couldn't. I haven't bow hunted in a few years but I could today if I had the urge. Had surgery 11/5/12 and I think 3 months most op I could have drawn a bow without problem.

I am not sure how your PCa was treated, but if it was surgery I would sure want to wait until I was sure it was well healed before I dragged a deer out of the woods, or carried a quarter of an elk any distance. I did not do any real heavy lifting/pulling for a year.

Doctor, will I be able to play the piano after my surgery?

Krugzz, I am a bowhunter for sure. I didn't have surgery so while I can't weigh in on that directly, I can't image why at this point in time after your surgery (late August I think?) there would be any reason to preclude you from pulling back a bow.

I bow hunt with a guy who had his prostate removed 3 years ago and has no issues of any kind. He climbs trees like a monkey and pulls his bow just fine. He shoots a 60 pound compound bow. He had is surgery in the summer and was hunting 3 months later.

Please Please someone tell my husband that it is Contraindicated to hunt following PC. Nine days after open RP he went bear hunting at 3am. He drew on a Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep..which is once in a life time here in Idaho. He drew in a unit in the Frank Church Wilderness. Only access is foot or horse. He spent all summer scouting sheep. He had one horse die on him...so sad. That didn't stop him. A few weeks ago he broke his leg out there 12 hours out on horseback 10 hour drive home and I took him into the ER..confirmed his break gave him a walking cast. The next day he was in the garage welding iron frame for his hunting boot spray painted it black so it didn't reflect. He goes out all by himself no cell service..he does have a SPOT that he can send satellite messages to us....he's nuts....once in a life time..ya he only has once of his lifetime. He's always been driven and does things over the top but his PC I believe has turned it up a notch. At least he is not home depressed on the couch worried about his PC and rising PSAs....but some how I've got to figure out how to keep this good man down!!! Alison-the hunter's widow.

I played golf three weeks after open RP which is more invasive than DaVinci . I once was a bow hunter back before compound bows (which are I believe easy to pull back and hold) were invented. I don't know much about the new technology but it doesn't seem to be any more difficult than swinging a golf club! Lol

The bigger issue would be dragging the animal out of the woods or lifting it or climbing which I would wait a few months to do until you are fully continent and fully healed internally . Your doctor will tell you when it's safe and the type of surgery will probably dictate it to some extent.

Bow hunting will be your least concern post op!

Mid-July 4 years ago, I had DaVinci surgery.
The year before I purchased a Diamond Liberty 60#compound bow. I set it up with a hot, 80% let-off cam and was ready in case some unsuspecting buck walked into my back yard and started eating the flowers.

The first time I tried to pull it back post surgery I peed all over myself. I had to reduce the pull to 45 pounds before I had a chance of doing it without making a mess of my undies. I waited.
I do not like to be wet outdoors - or in drawers.
A year later, after my sling surgery, I could do it with no trouble.

Be careful out there.

My arms sure as heck aren't ready and I have not been this year or last. Have lately been hanging out around the shop overly-obsessed with fixin' stuff wondering about what my PSA is and getting ready for my RadOnc consult appointment this week Wednesday. But, there is always next year . . .
