Would you want to see a "live" Da Vinci surgery if given the opportunity?

I was at my surgeons office last week having a PSA test for a reasearch study I am involved in and I asked if it was possible to visit the OR sometime to see the Robot I never saw when I had my surgery last year.

I was given someone's name to contact to inquire about it. I wrote her last night and she emailed me back today. She said that since it is a Adventist hospital, no one would be there on a Saturday. Then she asked if I would like to observe a surgery performed sometime. She would have to, of course, get the surgeon's final approval but it is something they do from time to time.

I believe you actually watch it on TV monitors in another room. I am not one who likes to see blood, especially my own, but as most of us surgery guys have expressed, we miss never having seen the Robot.

Would you do it if you were able?

I would ask for a release from the patient. Unless you are a student or staff at the hospital, you are breaking a number of laws unless the patient consents.

I've watched a video taken from the robot, and I have no desire to see any more.

Since the hospital does this, I am sure they know what the privacy laws are and what is legally required before hand.

when I had my seeds implanted there were two guys from the company that manufactured the seeds who asked permission to observe, which I consented to.

The hospital asked me to sign a waiver to allow students and staff to observe, but it included extensive language as to how they qualified to observe.

yes indeed. would be great. I've seen a video of it done, but live would be wonderful. Thanks. I had my robotic done nearly 2 years ago now.

Yes, of course I would. Mostly, I want to see the machine... again -- this time without the drugs that prevented me from recording the memory, but, with appropriate consent from the patient, I would like to see it in action.

Actually, watching any surgery would be fascinating to me.

Also, if you ever get a chance to attend an AUA or ASCO meeting, you can actually play with a Da Vinci robot. But the reps will not let you remove their prostates.

I am with you, I really wanted to see the machine but as I said, they came back with this offer.
I think they don't show the prep just the operation part on a TV monitor in a separate room.

I just asked for and received my Operative Report last week. VERY INTERESTING! It tells what they did to me and in what order. Just before they operated, they had a "time out" which I found out is like a pre-op checklist like a pilot does a pre-flight checklist. They put me in the Trendelenburg position, dissected and bagged the prostate, removed 2 lymph nodes from each side for testing, bagged, and removed through a side port. The camera came out and then they removed the prostate last. The report is 4 pages long and explains everything including the type of instruments used on the Da Vinci.

Pretty cool!

Oh there's the robot. Anesthesiologist said that's part of it, boom I was out. That was enought for me, lol.

Six years ago when I found out that I had joined the club that no man wants to join, I began doing research on who was the best Urologist in my aread for care. I had already made an appontment with my surgeon, but saw that he was due to perform a Di Venci live on line, with narration by one of his partners. I watched it and was in awe that he had the nerve to do one in real time, think if he screwed it up, it would be online forever!. The is very little blood involved, and I was surprised that it did not make me sick watching it. I saw the robot as they were hooking me up in the OR, and when I asked how often they changed the plastic sheeting over the robot, they put me out!

BTW if you are ever thinking about LASIK, do not watch the how-to video. I almost puked.

I wouldn't mine watching for a little bit, but that is a pretty long surgery. I would like to be able to leave when I grew bored.

I would LOVE to see one from the beginning. The link Tony posted was great. But I'd like to see from the beginning - the positioning of the robot over (us), how the arms go in, what each does, how they come out, how they put us back together. I'd love to see the whole thing. Does that exist on line anywhere?

I have seen lots of videos but none from beginning to the end. My surgeon, Dr. Vipul Patel has many videos on Youtube. As I mentioned early, I just got my Operative Report last week which told a summary of everything they did to me. You can request one from your surgeon's office. They put you on a table and tilt the table until your feet are higher than your head at about a 25 degree angle. It is called the Trendelenburg Position. I'll let you Google it to see why they do that.

When I had my consult with my surgeon prior to my procedure, I mentioned how much I enjoyed watching an old program called The Operation on some station like Discover. He told me he could record the procedure for me if I brought in a DVD. So, I did and have a recording of what he did on the inside. It doesn't show the outside, but is the same view he had while performing the procedure. I thought it was pretty cool.

Yes, that would be great to watch. There are several excellent high definition youtube videos of robotic prostate surgeries online.

I work in the health field, and I believe doing this would abide with HIPPA compliance as long as the patient consents and/or everything is anonymized.
