Restrictions post biopsy

Having a prostate biopsy Wednesday. Of course they discussed blood in urine and stool for week or so, and semen for 1 to 2 months. I figure a sore butt for a week or so? smhair

But they didn't mention, and I was too shocked at the discussion of a biopsy to think to ask, what restrictions on activities and for how long after the biopsy. Wish they had for planning purposes, if nothing else.

Did you have post biopsy restrictions? What about sex restrictions post biopsy? Anything else I need to know or watch out for?

No heavy lifting for awhile. Sex is actually good after a few days to "clean the pipes" as they say. They may give you an antibiotic to prevent infection.

I had my first biopsy two weeks ago. I felt completely normal after 24 hours. Doctor said no heavy lifting for at least 48 hours. Like you, I expected to have a sore butt. That was not the case.
There was blood in my first bowel movement, but that quickly went away.
There was blood in my urine for a few days and then it lessened to some pink when first urinating, now it's normal.
The first semen was quite bloody, it shocked me and my wife. After two weeks there is still dark blood, they say that will last for another month or so, we'll see.
Overall the biopsy was much less painful and easier to recover from than I expected. It really wasn't that bad.
During the biopsy the doctor asked me to lay on my side. Inserting the instrument and moving it around was uncomfortable but not painful. When the sample is taken, you'll hear a click. I expected it to feel like a needle. It was much less painful that a needle, it was not that bad, more like a pinch. The whole procedure took about 15 minutes.

Mark - welcome to HW. Sorry you need to be here.

The biopsy is annoying, embarrassing and undignified but not painful. Heavy lifting is it about it. Watch your temperature for a couple of days and take the antibiotic they'll give. Infection is the only real danger for the procedure. You'll likely get bleeding when you pee for awhile. I noticed that it was slightly worse after I walked fast or had to carry something heavyish. It can be distressing to see blood come out but it's part of the process.

When I asked about restrictions on sex my Uro said, "Please wait till you get home, other than that, none." The color of your seamen might be alarming but it clears up in time. Warn you sex partner. My Uro's RN suggested using condom if the color bothers you during sex (she told me no less than three times, "tell your wife"). It was a few days before I felt like testing things out.

The other real danger of a biopsy is that they might fight prostate cancer. If that happens, we're here most days to answer questions and help you deal with that 'little' problem.

If the results are positive, you have months, not weeks ( according to John Hopkin's , no less ) to become fully informed and decide on your plan of action. IMHO, the patient is ultimately responsible for his care. You are the decider - please don't make a "knee-jerk" decision.

Sore for a few days if sitting on something hard. Blood in semen for a few months. Procedure was a "snap" (JAVGuzzi ;))

 welcome to our site sorry you have to be here, hopefully your stay here is short. as the others have said it's not painful just undignified and uncomfortable . I had a lot of blood in my urine for the first couple hours I didn't notice any in my stool but it took a couple months to clear out of my semen. use towels on the bed and warn your wife it's kind of freaky if you're not prepared. as far as restrictions I resumed normal activity without heavy lifting same day. good-luck and stay positive!

I had no side effects. The whole process is no worse than a colonoscopy. Why would anyone be embarrassed about a procedure which may save your life?

For post restrictions, doc said no exercise, no sex for a week. Also, avoid aspirin and advil -- use tylenol only for a week or so.

Within the hour before my biopsy, I took two 5mg Valium and was happy as a clam.
Of course, have someone drive you back and forth if you do take the Valium. Most people told me before hand that it was only slightly uncomfortable. I asked my Uro for a Valium prescription and he said fine. Just a suggestion!!!!!!

My doc: No lifting, but have at the sex or whatever you use to pleasure yourself after you leave the office. A bit sore sitting, but by the next day I felt completely normal... except for the blood in my piss and semen... that was kind of interesting, but expected. It all cleared up within a month.

Biopsy was a piece of cake to me... the dentist is more painful. I walked in a room, dropped my pants to my knees, flopped on a table on my side, felt a little push where things normally go out, then pop, pop, pop (12 times), then quick clean up and out the door in 10 minutes (my wife timed it). Took me longer to check out.

Mark I played golf about 3 hours after biopsy had no pain or problems. The sex pArt however was a bit odd. Prepare your partner for and ejaculation that is mostly red! Better yet perhaps have one by yourself first so you can explain it. For me it was a major surprise I thought it would be normal with a streak or 2 of blood not the case
Same feeling no discomfort at all just a big shock!

Sex after the biopsy is not painful -- just a bit weird because of the vampire-movie-red semen.

Like Clanda, I found that a bit of Valium taken in the waiting room makes the biopsy a lot more tolerable. I find that guys in white coats poking around up my butt with spring-loaded instruments makes me nervous. Without the meds I jump a foot every time the biopsy "gun" goes off. With the valium I scarcely come off the table at all. It's not painful but it's damm annoying.

no but the weirdness factor of the color is a bit high.
