Retention at night was the reason I went for my Greenlight Laser. I would wake up at about
3AM feeling like I was bursting to pee, then nothing came out. I'd get shooting pains in my kidneys. I'd walk to the kitchen, pour a shot of bourbon and seltzer water into a glass, drink it and keep walking around the kitchen. about
10 minutes later I'd get a flow and be able to urinate, and go back to bed. When it started happening a second time at 5AM I went for the surgery. At that point I was taking 2 flomax a day which helped during the daytime, but not at all at night. The one good thing about
the GL is that I haven't had retention at night again. I go better at night than I sometimes do during the day.
I haven't cathed in a couple of months now, and hope not to have to. The only supplement or pill of any kind I am taking now is the Nature's Bounty Cranberry Fruit 4200mg plus Vitamin C softgels. I take two with breakfast and two with dinner. This is not the same as cranberry extract, which is more concentrated. 4200mg of Cranberry Fruit equals about
80 mg of cranberry extract. The reason I am going this route is that I have read that higher doses of cranberry extract promotes proteinuria, which I already have. I find that my stream during the day can depend on how much liquid I have drunk (less liquid = poorer stream) and also if I have done physical yard work (dehydration = poorer stream). A strange thing I have found is that when my stream stops, if I lean sideways from side to side, the stream will often start again in 10 to 15 seconds and then continue for 10 or more seconds. It's like I'm stimulating my bladder or urethra to get back to business. The one thing I never do is strain to push out the urine. If I want to give myself a push I expand my stomach with air and push out my stomach, which in turn must squeeze the bladder a bit. I'm not sure if the cranberry is working or not, but I haven't used a cath in 2 months since I started using it and hope not to have to. My experience with commercial prostate formulas was that they all seemed to help for a few weeks, but then my symptoms got worse. For that reason I am a bit leery of experimenting.

Marshall: Many thanks for the info on IP-6 and arginine. I do not feel my flow has improved since I had the Gat Goren procedure 15 months ago. Perhaps, it is more a matter of bladder function. I am hesitant to take flomax and the other pharmaceuticals on the market. I question whether it would be more appropriate to take these drugs. The more one pushes to release urine especially at night, the harder the bladder muscle must work. Perhaps this invites thickening of the bladder wall and overtime diminishes its elasticity and capability to do its job. A natural alternative without side effects such as arginine would be a blessing.
