Ok, everything was doing well. I had my surgery Nov. 11, catheter removed this past Thursday (Nov. 21). Since I have had the catheter removed every time I urinate it fells like a raw spot about half and inch from tip of penis causing a little burning sensation every time I go. Not sure if the catheter caused an abrasion to the urethra.

Well today, every time I urinated the first few drops or at most a teaspoon of urine was slightly tinged reddish, and a few times a minute blood clot would pass, then the normal urine color. There never was enough blood to discolor the urine in the toilet bowl.

I am not sure this is normal or something might be wrong.

I had that happen to me about 2 weeks after my catheter was removed. I called right away and they assured me that it was not that unusual. They told me to drink plenty of water and clean the pipes so to speak. If it continued for more than a couple of days they would want to see me. It didn't continue and there was no further issue.

Drink plentiful of water, keeping flushing the bladder.
For myself, i had it clear up for a couple of weeks.

i was told this could happen. I'd mention it to your doctor but I'm sure he'll tell you it's expected. Drink a lot of water and you'll probably notice it getting fainter and fainter.

It is a common occurence post-op - you need to flush out the bits floating around your system - bits of blood, small blood clots, even bits of stitches thread.... just try not to force the issue when having a b.m. or peeing - just go with the flow - and I echo the comments above - drink plenty of fluids - do your kegels ( 50 x 20 a day was my doc's routine) and walking - a bit more each day - helps stamina - continence - and mental attitude -

-and it the blood stuff gets worse - call the doctor -
-and if not, good for you ... and don't sweat it or beat yourself up if you seem to backslide over control of bodily functions - you have been through a major trauma and are in healing mode ....

The exact thing is happening to me now. I had my surgery the day after yours; on Nov 12. The catheter was removed one week ago. I am curious why the sensation began occurring 7 days later rather than sooner. No blood at any point during urination but a very slight trace on the pad. Thanks to the others for the reminder to drink plenty of water.
BTW, what is recommended for care of the incision sites? The tape is still on the wounds. Can they/ should they be washed with soap and water?
Thanks to all who have posted the wealth of information on this site. I located it and read it widely during the downtime after my procedure.

I am 4 weeks post op tomorrow 3 weeks post cath and still have a few red tinges first few drops, and bits and pieces flowing every now an then. I just developed that slight burning sensation yesterday, hopeful it will go away, not really painful, but kind of like an itch you cant scratch. UTI, I don't know will give it a couple more days and see what happens.

Nick, the last of my stitches just dissolved this week, I had a surgeons glue over each incision, there was no added care, just shower soap and water.

When you have surgery they cut away the part of the urethra that passes through the prostate, and sew the two ends together (thus the need for the catheter). It is a wound that has to heal. Scars form, scabs form and fall off over time. Bits of suture dissolve and fall out. There will be lots of little garbage and drops of blood over the weeks post-surgery.

If it continues, is painful, or you want to know about it, call the surgeon and ask questions.

I developed several urinary tract infections in the several months after surgery, and passed a lot of excess goo and gunk, as the sutures finally healed up.

I was told to use waterproof bandages over the sutures and not get them wet (i.e. shower only, no baths) until a number of weeks after the surgery. Then I was to pat them with a soapy washcloth (NEVER to rub/scrub) and to rinse by letting water run down from above them (NEVER pointing the shower spray directly at them. At a later checkup, he had a look, and said "back to normal bathing", and we were done with that challenge.

My urologist called back after sending him an email. He said what everybody here mentioned, that is is common and not to worry about the small amount of blood. He said it could take a week to disappear and is a normal process of healing.

What a relief! I thought that my nocturnal erections prior to and after the catheter removal caused injury to the anastomosis (joining of the urethra).
