I was wondering if there was any strategic difference in the style of underpants to be worn. Ive always worn boxers since I liked feeling less restricted . after surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago I not briefs and wore them to keep the pad in place . and once pads were gone continued with the briefs . im now back on boxers , cause the feeling is better. but I have read on here that the briefs help hold things up and together . on another note im realizing that that horrible feeling to pee all the time even right after going isn't coming from my bladder . the sensation is that the pee is right there in my penis . I don't want to be a complainer but id rather have a migraine headache than this constant uncomfortable feeling .

I've opted for some tighter briefs for better support. There was the initial tightness but lately it feels OK. Being a diabetic I do get up a few times at night, but thats OK too. Many here take months before they go pad-less, you are doing exceptionally well after 3.5 weeks! All the best!

I have never been able to wear briefs since my initial op back in 2008. I spent nearly 2 years on catheters post surgery, thus boxers were the better choice. Then after having the bladder by-pass surgery in 2010, with the stoma, can't wear briefs at all, they would push up and rub against the stoma and not allow enough room for the collection bag.

So after a lifetime of briefs, been forced to wear boxers the past 5 plus years.

I'm a boxer kind of guy....and will never forget wearing them the day the cath was taken out... Darn boxer could come close to holding a pad and what a mess....

After the pads - back to boxers...

yeah, pads and boxers don't mix, but they are a blessing when wearing a cath

My understanding is that the main reason for a bit of suspension is to make you more comfortable. If boxers feel better, I say go for it.

For guys where the boxer thing is a fashion statement, the "Depends" people make pull-up underwear that look like boxers on the outside but hold a pad in place.

It is likely that the sensation you have in your penis when you have to pee (or have just gone) is "referred" pain from your sutures near your sphincter. The nerves get irritated where they run past your stitches and you feel it where the nerves end. That should get better with time.

Thanks Peter , so its really not urine in the penis then right ? just a sensation like it . because wen I relax nothing seeps out . its real annoying and also makes me go to the bathroom more than I need to I believe

If you listen to the computerized phone menu at most urologists offices there is a choice to ask the doctor's nurse a question. This would be a good one. I'm pretty sure the nurse will tell you that your discomfort is normal and will probably go away. If you want an actual medical opinion on my "referred pain" theory you'll probably need to save that one for the doctor -- it will be above the nurses pay grade.

I am having having the same discomfort as you. Especially in the afternoon. It is a very uncomfortable feeling as if urine was caught in your penis. It kind of feels like the sphincter is in spasm (which it might be) holding things back. I find that if I can lay horizontal for awhile, most of that feeling subsides. As far as underwear, I think you should go with comfort. The only downside to boxers is if you need a pad, "willie" might not be able to hit the bullseye.
Speaking of that, what's with the diagram in the pad anyway? Do they think we are too stupid to figure it out? Female pads don't have a bullseye!

Oh one more thing. You do have a third option in underwear. Boxer briefs!! In fact, that's what I started wearing after the surgery.

I get a drip or two that sometimes happens moments after zipping and walking out of the bathroom. I prefer briefs to easily absorb the drip rather than have it land on my thigh while wearing boxers. But whatever works for you is all that matters.

If you had asked me after surgery, "boxers or briefs", my answer would have been "Depends"--literally. Fortunately, that answer was only appropriate for 3 weeks. yeah

Not that my response answers your question, but this is to those who use pads. I wear briefs with spandex to hold the pad up close so I do not get any leakage from the wandering boy. Then I wear boxers over it all. I tuck my undershirt into the boxers rather than into the briefs where they would just get wet.

Then my shirt I just normally tuck in. This gives me two layers of protection besides the pad incase I have a major leak. It has helped me at night time as well, if I sleep on my side and leak some, the two layer system has prevented or lessened the chance of wetting my clothes or the bed.

I wear a brief/boxer mix. It provides support for the thin guard I wear (still leaking if I sneeze).

As to the "feeling" of leaking. yes, I often feel like I'm leaking all the time or have a very full bladder. Only to find a dry pad or go and find a fairly empty bladder. I think its in my head, worried about continence when its really not an issue.
