I'm adverse to any more cutting on me than is absolutely necessary. I would ask my doc if a MRI and then a targeted biopsy, if necessary, would not be a better option. If a biopsy proves necessary, far fewer samples would be required.

If it were me I'd have the biopsy. My urologist was relieved when my biopsy found the cancer i.e. something is making the PSA rise.

I've decided to consult with another urologist. My current one is a D.O. working in urology who I now identify as "Doogie Houser" due to his extreme youth. He has made 2 comments during visits that in my opinion reflect what he thinks of me: an oldster whose life has been lived and is now on the downhill slide and not of much use anymore. I could tell by his facial expression that the first demeaning comment "slipped out". I'm not comfortable with the kid and don't want to be the subject of a kid who's attitude toward me will compromise the rest of my many remaining years.

So for now the weight has been lifted although temporarily. I'll keep y'all posted. I'm not sweeping it under the rug by any means. I just want to work with someone I can trust and feel good about. NO ONE can fault me for this or call me crazy. I have really appreciated the wealth of information, perspective and caring reflected in this forum. You folks are great....

Okie... sounds like a great idea. about being crazy... nobody can say that about this decision... I can't comment on other idiosyncrasies you may have smilewinkgrin

Sounds like plan for now. I did that once on my second biopsy. I had my first biopsy in 2000, it was negative. Then in 2004 my PSA was higher. The second doctor agreed with the first that my PSA warranted a biopsy. It was negative. But it was a 6 core biopsy. I am convinced now that if it was a 12 core biopsy, they would have found the cancer. My surgeon said that with the size of my tumor, I must have had PCa for the last 10 years.

My PSA was 18.5 in 2012, yours is 18. There is a reason your PSA is 18. You need to find out why? If your next uro suggest another biopsy, you need to listen to him/her and most of us here.

We don't want you to have PCa, we just don't want you to be stubborn and ignore the warnings signs you have.

Dear Okie, sounds like kicking Doogie to the curb makes sense. You are not the first guy on this forum to fire a urologist (I did it too). You want someone with whom you are comfortable.

I've had to back off from this forum for a period....was depressing me with regard to what comes after the prostate removal and how it could affect me. I'm in serious denial and am tempted to just blow the whole thing off and go ahead with the consequences should I have pca. My rationale is that death within 6 months after the spread of cancer to a terminal stage would be better than years of catheters, impotence, incontinence and drugs.

Yes, my attitude really sucks at this point. And for that I apologize to all of you who are undergoing the experience. I've been in perfect all my life (will be 70 in April) and am more active (and better looking) than most 40-yr-olds. I can't imagine succumbing to anything less without a big fight. Have any of you seen that drawing of the huge eagle swooping down on the little mouse? The mouse is just standing there looking up at his fate as he is giving the eagle the finger. Well, cancer/age/death is the eagle and I am that little mouse. That's just me.

Anyway, I did make an appt with a new urologist for the afternoon of 31 December to discuss his approach. If you remember, "Doogie Houser" left me feeling like that I was basically a biological "has been" and a senile old fart. I later found out that the kid completed his residency in 2012. That's too young for my comfort. To boot, he was a D.O. assigned to urology.

Anyway, it's my body and my decision as to what to do with it. If this new dude wants to do a biopsy, it'll be a 12-core and not Doogie's saturation fling. He'll proceed under my terms.

Please spare me the lectures on my attitude. It is what it is. I wish all of you success in your battles!

okie,

for starters, even if you had advanced PC, you more than likely wouldn't be dying in 6 months. even men with terrible stats with multiple failed treatments, can often take years to die. PC is generally a slower moving cancer than most.

perhaps you should take a break from the whole process. trying to remember what your objection is to a saturation type biopsy. even a good 12 core can probably find any cancer if it exists. some of us, had to go through quite a few of them before cancer was found, it's generally not a big deal.

at your age of 70, even if a small amount of low grade PC was found, you would very well choose not to treat the cancer, practice AS, and more than likely never die of PC.

But as you said, its your body and your decision. We are here to help those that want to be helped, if not, thanks for giving us a chance. We are always here if you change your mind and attitude about the whole matter.

Why do you believe that you are in for years of catheters, impotence, incontinence and drugs?

If these are the things that worry you then you should know that there are treatments for prostate cancer that can involve little of this if the cancer is caught early. John T for example who has posted on your thread has done brachytherapy which involve radioactive seeds implanted within the prostate and I do not believe he has any of the issues that you are concerned about. In addition the actual procedure has a pretty fast recovery time.

You sound like a fit healthy person with a long life ahead of you. It may be worthwhile finding out what you have, if anything. It sounds like Doogie is not the right doctor for you.

Gents: I'm going to wrap up this thread. My rants and sucky attitude are contributing NOTHING toward helping anyone here. I may or may not check back in at a later date. Okie, Most newcomers as yourself are not expected to contribute, they are expected to rant and have a sucky attitude. I will admit it annoys me, but do understand the reason. Most here are not annoyed by it, and thats a good thing. We all do our part to help in our way. You are beset by circumstances that happened. We all were. Folks are telling you things that are true about your case and this disease. You do not have a deal breaker case Of Pca. Face it! get over being mad that you have it and get rid of it . With your stats it is doable. If you had a loved one with the same stats, a father , brother son, you'd be all over him to take care of it. You know Im right. Just take care of it and get over your response to this bad news. Im sorry, but you don't strike me as someone that has need of physchaiatric treatment. You are just pissed of, and blaming yourself and taking it out on your self. Just stop doing that and face the facts of your case and get it fixed period. If you were fishing somewhere and your boat sank and you couldn't swim and a "lifesaver" was thrown to you , you would grab it. So "hardhead" grab it!!! Take the last sentence there in the spirit and good faith it was delivered.
