Todd, I have to second what Peter said - do a little googling on the message popup. Most computer viruses are well known and there are fixes for them.

If you could email me a screen shot of the annoying popup or the exact wording of the suspect program/process, I'll check around and see if I can find what is causing that.

and I'll also second the suggestion - buy a MAC.

Avast also has a boot scan that runs before Windows starts up. It can get rid of other bad stuff.

Have you run MalwareBytes anti-malware? If not, boot into safe mode with networking enabled, download it and run it in safe mode. Do a complete scan. If it says it removed it and then comes back, you need to delete your system restore files, boot again to safe mode and run MBAW.

Depending on what browser you are having these issues on, using the AdBlock Plus Add-on will let you manage pop-ups that are appearing in the browser.

I see that some of your issues are in the browser, but from the problem description unclear what (if anything) is happening when the browser is closed.

Searching for the exact message may indeed get you more specific information.

Don't panic and think you have to try more and different software, etc. It is very easy to get too many cleaners/anti-virus, etc running at once and they will give you more of a mess than you have.

I also vote for Avast Free & MalwareBytes - plus scrupulous checking of links before you open them.
