My husband lost his battle

It has taken me a couple of weeks to bring myself to write this.

His PSA had climbed to 10 and we were booked for a bone scan and an oncology consult to determine next plan of attack as Lupron/Casodex was not halting the progression. There was no immediate fear as along with the relatively low PSA, the last CT scan had shown a couple of minor possible mets but that some had shrunk too and a Xray (for another issue) done 2 weeks ago showed absolutely nothing in the pelvic area. He was feeling achy and tired which we had put down to Lupron side effects. Full bloodwork ordered as well. This was on Friday. Follow up appointment booked for Tuesday AM

By Monday he was much worse so called in for results early. As soon as doc got them from the lab he booked an urgent ultrasound Tuesday morning. He was starting to be in a lot of pain mainly in the small of his back (bone met???) and very week

Ultrasound showed mass in liver. 6 months earlier there was no signs of anything in the liver. Checked into hospital Tuesday afternoon. CT scan Wednesday first thing with biopsy planned in the PM.

Biopsy cancelled. 99.99% probability to be prostate cancer. Who really cares what kind of cancer!!!! Oncology meeting planned for Thursday.

Oncology cancelled as bloodwork showed complete shutdown.

Friday they told us there was not treatment and we made arrangements to bring him home. Hospital bed. Nursing staff etc

Arrived home Saturday afternoon and passed at 3:30AM Sunday morning.

His pain was under control and his family was around him so it was a peaceful end.

I know this sounds very matter of fact but I can't go to the emotional side any more. I have cried too many tears. I am sad and lonely and I can't believe that it happened so quickly

Oh Nancy, so very sorry for your loss. You both fought a courageous battle, and it's sad this developed so rapidly and unexpectedly. He was fortunate to have the support of loved ones.

Sounds like he went comfortably, surrounded by his family. Not a bad way to go. And he went quickly. That always leaves the family flattened but is better for the patient. It's a crappy sort of consolation, but it's what I've got.

There are a lot of us praying for you and thinking about you.

From one wife to another, I am praying for your heart to heal. I got on this morning to ask a question about my husbands oncology/urologist appt for this afternoon. We are new to this. I can't remember what I was going to ask, because the truth is, I know that someday I am going to be you, and it is heartbreaking. I wish you peace, and I am glad you were able to be with your husband, at home.
