Just home today after RP surgery at Sloan with Dr Eastham. Surgery went well according to him. Recovery so far is slow with a lot of discomfort but walking has helped the gas for now. Catheter sucks but that's part of the deal. Being in good shape heading in was a big plus.

Thanks to all who helped answer questions. I'm sure there will be more.

Give it time, and by time I don't mean much time. You will see significant improvements on a daily basis and in all probability within 7-10 days you'll be ready to start up many of your routines. Best advise is to be patient, walk as much as you can, drink a ton of water, and pick up a good series on DVD to watch.

Glad that's over for you.. You'll feel like a new man when the cath comes out! Now onto healing..

Welcome to the other side Hatter!

Wearing a catheter is the worst that it gets and it will be a horrible memory in a week or so. The next step is your first BM. Be sure to use stool softeners so you don't have to strain to hard. Drinks lots of water and walk often and you will feel better each day.

Good luck with your pathology report in about a week.

Jees! Horrible memory? Cath is nowhere near as bad as that. The worst is gas pain IMHO. The first BM is a major threshold and it's all down hill from there. Good luck!

Good to hear surgery went well. Walk and drink as much as you can, but listen to your body and don't overdo it.

one thing at a time...walk + water to recovery is the 1st priority now

Welcome to the other side. Remember , there's a reason you are called "the patient," so don't rush things. There's a lot of healing that must go on inside.

Glad you made it through. The first couple of weeks do seem to grind by slowly.

You've got a lot of healing to do. Hang in there, it gets better from here. Walk, water and rest. You'll get through and before you know this will be just a bad memory.

Glad the surgery went well, take care of the catheter by keeping it clean where it enters your willy. After a few days there will be a build up of gunk that is uncomfortable. A warm washcloth to clean the tube plus some lube makes a difference.

Welcome to the other side. Don't have any post-op recommendations that haven't already been said. Be patient and do your exercises. I hope your recovery is short and painless.

Hi Everyone,

I am newly home from having the open prostatectomy and have a question. I've had small bowel movements but can feel a regular one "waiting." I walk and walk and walk and can feel it ready but when I sit down to go - nothing. Any suggestions?

I am accustomed to pushing a little bit to begin a bowel movement but cannot do this for obvious reasons. I am taking stool softeners and am eating foods that help the process (fruit, soups, fish, veggies) as well as drinking plenty of fluids and jello in between meals per doctors orders.

Pier3V, I had the same problem after robotic surgery. I called my surgeon and he told me to take 1 (one) Docolax tablet. Worked for me but I'm not a doctor. I continued to take the stool softeners daily also.
