I have discussed the copper/zinc theory with my PCP, he said insurance firms have denied most doctors from testing for "metals" in the body for a long time now. He's seeing how he can work around that part. If he can't via my Medicare, then I plan to get the VA to check for it. I have a set appointment coming up in a few weeks with my VA PCP.
David,
Because I am, as are others here, worried about
your condition, I was just chewing over your medical situation with an old high school buddy -- a former Navy hospital corpsman and fellow Vietnam vet. He and I actually met up a couple of times while we were both in country in '68. He's been under V.A. medical care for years now, for both PTSD and an A.O.-related heart condition. His take was to escalate this issue to the V.A. pronto -- with the NY Times article in hand--and tell them your civilian insurance doesn't want to pay for tests of metals even though this is a proven cause of similar physical wasting in at least some patients. He thinks there should be no reason the VA won't test, even if it is just to rule this out. Unlike what many of us have seen in the news, he says his experience with the VA medical system has always been great, including primary care, cardiology, mental health, hearing aids, eyeglasses, and more-- though from what I read, we here in the Northeast may have better VA services than some folks in other parts of the country.
Can you get your V.A appointment moved up, given that your civilian primary care doc says you are approaching a risk organ failure and you have found an avenue of investigation your civilian insurer won't authorize?
