An update:
Scheduling the surgery set off an alarm (I have since postponed/cancelled). My insurer has now assigned a caseworker (RN) and she will interview me in a couple days.
Has anyone else gone through this? If so what was your experience? It could be a beneficial relationship, but she was clear in our first conversation that she cannot advise on anything to do with benefits: as an RN is only capable of dealing with medical issues.
I asked if there was an equivalent that could work with me through the money side of things so I could better understand my options - she will check, but said it is likely that I'll have to deal with whoever takes the call.
On a different front - I will consult with an oncologist, Dr. Scholz, over the phone later this week. Many thanks to John T and others for the recommendation. I was initially looking to use the service that Cleveland Clinic offers, but it was too impersonal - you send in the money and the data and they issue a report with their findings. I was told there is no opportunity to talk with the doctor or ask questions. I need more than that right now.
