Surgery done.. Not doing well

Hi all,
Bob had his surgery Tues. the 3rd. Surgery lasted one hour and twenty minutes. The surgeon said all looked good, 90 percent of nerves spared, lymph nodes left (saw nothing indicative of a spread), no stickiness to nearby organs. All in all he said he is very hopeful path will come back contained. Bob did well yesterday (no one warned me about the fluorescent green urine though, or if they did I forgot it). Today he was supposed to go home but that didn't happen. Bowels are quiet and not waking up, drain filling w/blood every couple hours, fever, severe nausea, shakes every time he gets up, erratic pulse, and more. I don't know what's going on but dramatic turn for the worse today so no idea when he will go home. They've taken him off food again and are pumping tons of meds in. I'm ready for this to be over!!

Sounds like an infection.

Once the antibiotics kick in he will feel better. Might take a couple of days.

I was trapped in the hospital for three days. The bowel problems are quite typical -- part of the vicious cycle of using opiate pain meds to treat the pain of the constipation they cause. Don't like the fever part. Most guys get to skip that. Hopefully they can get that under control so he can fart, have a bit of a poo and go home.

All the best to Bob. Take it easy and things will go right for Bob. While he has these problems its good that they keep him under observation.

Yesterday, my wife and I just spoke about the time it took to do my op. I went in at about 2;30pm and came out of recovery at 6:30pm. An hour and 1/2 sounds fast, but the UROs get so proficient with the new technology its hard to fathom if 1.5 hours were Ok or not! I had 6 holes, including a drainage hole and another at about 10 O'clock above my navel. I also had a weeping navel for a few days (think 7 days). The hospital made me walk at least a four times around the wards, with that funny back-to-front apron showing my crease to whomever was looking my way. Dignity is the first casualty of surgery.

The pain meds kept me "crap-less" for almost 4 days. Stool softners do help. Tell him not too strain crap will come (no pun intended)

let Bob know it does get better ..

Good that they spared quite a few nerves; now for the big wait for that first post RRP PSA. Fingers crossed!

Sorry to hear this update Miki - hang in there, as you know surgery is an invasive process and it sounds like his body is reacting. Based on some of the other inputs here it seems like while not normal what Bob is going through is also not completely uncommon either. I'm sure he'll turn the corner towards healing soon and will keep you both in my prayer chain.

Miki...hang in there and reassure Bob that his body is reacting to mayor surgery....my husband too had the bowels taking a longer time than usual to wake up and because of it we had to go back to the hospital thru emergency two days after he was released.  It is better that they keep Bob in the hospital until he is really ready to go home and not rush it (like they typically do).  My husband's drain also filled with blood very quickly and when he was released from the hospital the drain was still attached to him...not fun.  I hope this helps in someway. 

I was "in" for four days after DaVinci - it was day three before I could get down the hall without falling over or puking. Day four marked the first BM, and that was their permit to send me home.

Actually it worked out just as well that I was kept for that time. Between stairs to get to my apt, and that I had limited help, I could not have possibly gone home the next day.

We are here for you Miki - please have trust in the medical staff and also faith - I know not much help but trust me when I say we are out here and you are both in our collective thoughts and prayers. . . .

Hang in there... Dr's will run the appropriate blood/urine/stool/ tests to figure out what is going on. I developed a urinary infection as well as cdiff. Antibiotics had to be carefully selected so as not to worsen the cdiff. We are here for you. I think I was on flagyl for the UTI.

Miki, so sorry about this, and that you are dealing with it alone. But you are not alone as many have said we are all thinking if you and Bob, praying for you both.
