My husband was diagnosed April 2014 after regular doc sent him to urologist for biopsy......never before had PSA test or biopsy.

age 74 (now 75)   PSA 51.7

biopsy showed.....12 of 12 cores positive for cancer....both sides

 8 cores   3+4=7  30% to 100%

 3 cores   4+3=7  60% to 100%

 1 core    4+5=9   90%

   3 cores with tertiary pattern 5

   6 cores with perineural invasion

CT and bone scans showed 2 small spots on shoulder and back and lymph nodes involved

Enlarged prostate...irregular and poorly evaluated

Started Lupron immediately....every 4 months...has had two so far

Had 40 radiation treatments to prostate and nodes....NOT bones

Has calcium infusion - Zometa - every 4 to 8 weeks

Last scan showed bone spots GONE

PSA is now 0.1

Doctors ay this is because the Lupron is working like it should.

My question......He feels great...just a little more tired.  How long can this be this good....with these bad numbers?    Sometimes it's hard to believe he has this.....but all the tests show it.   Confused....thanks.

I am happy to read that he is responding to treatment and yes Lupron has many side effects associated with the use of it, including fatigue. Surprising to hear that your husband never had a PSA test prior to this, especially given his age of 74. There are a lot of options for him once Lupron fails and others can tell you about those. He does have a high risk Gleason Score of 9 and all 12 cores positive for cancer, so that is of concern. But for now rejoice in the fact he is responding to treatment. Keep us posted and my best to you and your husband.

That's the $64.00 question isn't it? Everybody is different it could be years before the HT stops producing the results you desire. After that there are avenues to pursue, ask doctors and get informed as to what lays ahead.
In the mean time it's great to see the HT is working with minimal side effects!

What a great report. He's doing really well.

How long will it last? Who knows, months, years - just enjoy every moment of now. Likely he's got a very long time before having to change anything with his treatment.

and there are still options left if the current plan stops working.

It sounds like you are doing very well with your current course of treatments !

That's a tremendous drop in PSA values and now the bone scans have cleared up, as well.

I think from all of these things, you should be feeling very encouraged and hopeful. You are responding very well to the Lupron treatments already !

So I just wanted to send you some BEST WISHES and it sounds like you are on a very positive course of action.

Good for the both of you! He's responding very well to ADT which is great news. Many of us have bad side effects. Count yourselves fortunate! Please tell us why he didn't get psa tests much earlier in life?

Excellent results. The treatment will last long enough to reach his normal life span and die of something else. For those who don't want to live for ever, this side of the veil, that should suffice.

Why my husband did not get a PSA test earlier in life??   Well, we have been married 52 years.....and have been very fortunate to be fairly, mostly, healthy...no major problems.   We have never gone to the doctor for anything much....very lucky I know.  And when he did go.....no doctor ever mentioned a PSA test...until he had the frequent urination problems last spring....at age 74.   We are thankful we made it this far.   And yes, we are now telling our sons (ages 51 and 42) to get the PSA test and not wait.   Thanks to everyone on this site for posting so much good information....for people like me.....who knew very little about prostate cancer.
