Pratoman,

Found the bottle and it is Docusate Sodium, 100mg. It is a generic OTC and, as it turns out, was the same thing the hospital bill had on it. It is a nice red and white softgel tablet and the Doc said I could take 4 a day if needed. This drug is available OTC with various brands like Equate and names like that. Give it a try if you are able. Worked like a charm for me and I was on regular food the night after the surgery. (Went into surgery about 0730 or so.)

This was very gentle, did not act as a stimulate keeping me awake, but within the first 5 days back, the gas was gone as was the "backup" in my colon. The hardest part then was to keep the BM soft and not total liquid. The Doc wanted it to be soft for a few weeks while everything healed and the trauma to organs not removed could calm down.

Hang in there on the Pathology report and the catheter removal. My doctor leaves the catheter in for 14 days (ended up being 17 days because he was out teaching!) but the nurse takes it out anyway. You DON'T want the doctor doing that! The nurses know better how to remove it without it feeling like they pulled on the wrong thing.

When I got the report, it took a while for me to figure out what to ask and I missed a bunch of questions. The feeling of no catheter and that the gross things on the Path report were fantastic made my mind turn off I guess. I now have had time to go over the report myself and have a list of questions for him. We will also have the real PSA test (it WILL be <0.1 like the early one) so we can talk better about the true meaning of the report for me.

There is no use worrying about it (I will do that for you if you wish) as the night before you will not sleep well no matter what. it is natural and expected. Just think of getting rid of that bag attached to you. I am jealous that you are getting it removed so soon.

The stool softener you mention is what I am taking , under the name Colace, red and white pill as you describe. And yes, it's now working well, as you describe. I take 3x a day. Thanks for taking the trouble to look for it

Yes, when it comes to this thread, I'm like Pavlov's dog. My e-mail says there's a new posting and I quickly click on it to make sure I'm not missing anything. I haven't really posted on it since I'm not a surgery guy, but I've been very interested in how you're doing and rooting you on it. I would think this thread would have great value for others with surgery. The first few days of your ordeal might scare a few off, but the value is in how you were feeling and coping at the time. When you combine with that how you're doing now, it should give a lot of faith to those in recovery that they just have to hang in there a little longer. (Oh, and walk, walk, walk.)
