The original list contains reasons I might look at switching healthcare providers, but there are other important reasons I would consider a switch, too, such as...
* Not practicing evidence-based medicine. There are some docs who go by "gut-feel," and even tell their patients this is their decision-making tool. Another clue is when they start following one-size-fits-all approaches. I'm an engineer; I want someone who is at least as smart as me, and don't want a canned response.
* A close parallel to the is someone who doesn't stay up-to-date in his/her field. The base of knowledge in medicine is evolving, and it would take a lot of extra effort to stay abreast of the latest-and-greatest. A clue that your doc may not be motivated could be their response if you bring in a peer-reviewed study which may apply to your case and they blow you off. This is known to be a greater potential concern when you move into the community hospitals & VAs, and further away from the major medical centers.
* Focusing solely on "prescriptions and procedures." True, our system rewards doctors who focus on prescriptions and procedures, but the better doctors will nonetheless take a holistic and/or integrative approach to medicine. Top on the list is whether they voice concern, or even talk about, the patient's physical exercise routines. Foods and nutrition.
* Anyone who fails to respect my own responsibilities, ownership and advocacy for my healthcare.
