Reflections one year post surgery

Well, it's been one year since my surgery and I can't help think about what life was like before discoveringI had prostate cancer and the last year. Boy how things have changed. I wonder sometimes if I made the right decision although I realize that is water under the bridge. I also wonder what life has in store for me. There are so many mixed results with this disease, it seems like its hard to predict what the future holds. While my spirits are good, age, side effects of medication and the disease itself seem like they are all slowly chipping away at me. I used to have so much energy but now I just can't seem to keep going all day long anymore. Hip pain, planter pain, locking fingers, and shooting pains throughout my body are all now a daily occurrence. To combat these I started working out with a ten pound weight and have begun to stretch. Not regularly but its a start. I would like to build my strength back up before I return to ADT. So far it's helped. I can see the muscle developing in my arms and shoulders. Need to start working on legs next. Trying also to build my stamina. Maybe that will help with the fatigue that sets in every day. I want to live life, not just exist but it takes making an effort to change existence to living.

Yes, life does change for all of us, albeit in many different ways.

On the fitness side, I'm a lifelong "athlete" of sorts. I spent many years racing on the local road racing circuit, took a detour into triathlons, then got into marathons and eventually ultramarathons. Along the way I became a ski instructor as well. about 6 years ago I started lifting seriously, and 4 years ago, I stepped away from competitive running. I now do a lot of CrossFit as my primary activity, and I find myself still getting stronger at age 53. I do CrossFit during the week. In the winters, I teach skiing on the weekend. In the summers, I jog, hike, and bike (for fitness) on the weekends and spend as much time fly fishing as my life (wife) allows.

I've been lucky to have had a lower grade cancer and I've been spared from ADT, so far at least. But, no matter where I end up, the effort to stay fit and active is a part of me that I will never willingly give up. Time catches up to us all, but I'm going to play hard until I can't play at all any more.

Exercise is the right thing to do - best way to get energy is to just keep moving. Even simple walking will help. You might check around your area, you might find a fitness/physical therapy program that might help with the right kind of workout and/or motivation. Just a random thought.
