Bupropion use for PC side effects

Has the Forum ever discussed the possible use of Bupropion for the SE's of PC therapies ?

It's an "antidepressant and smoking cessation aid" isn't it?

Yes..but,it has a solid reputation for helping with some of the SE's of PC...such as boosting Libido, helping with ED, boosting energy, curbing appetite, Losing weight...etc.,

It would seem to be a natural, almost miracle drug for PC sufferers..

Just wondering..many times I jump the gun without thinking things through..

Maybe others will chime in

I never noticed libido, energy, or appetite effects of Buprioprion, but it sure works well as an antidepressant for me! It's the only antidepressant that's ever worked for me. The others didn't work and had a lot of side effects including sexual ones. So I think its a miracle drug too :) If my husband continues to be depressed I will be encouraging him to try it.

Google Bupropion & Libido....

Oh...my PCP advised me to expect delayed orgasm, also...

My understanding is that Buproprion is an OK antidepressant that lacks some of the side effects of the SSRI drugs such as Fluoxitine (Prozac) and is sometimes used in addition to those drugs to offset the side effects. I was on fluoxitine for a year and a half to offset the depression and the brain-fog caused by my hormone therapy. It helped with the depression but not so much with the brain fog so I added Buproprion which helped somewhat more with mental focus (but still no where near back to my pre-PC Abby-normal levels). I had hoped that it might help, also, with the sexual side effect of the fluoxitine -- anorgasmia -- but it didn't seem to do so. [Before starting the the Prozac generic I had found that, even on HT, with determined, and oddly unmotivated self-abuse pleasant things could be made to happen but not after starting the fluoxitine.]

I also briefly tried modafinil (generic Provigil) which seemed a much more effective drug which I could not get my insurance to pay for nor afford myself. Even buying the generic (modafinil) I found the best price I could find in the US to be over $17 a pill. If you live in a different market, or your insurance works better, or the prices change you might check that drug out, too.

The active treatment part of my hormone therapy ended eight months ago but my testosterone still hasn't recovered (it takes an extra year in most cases). Currently I am still on buproprion but have discontinued the fluxoitine shortly after then end of the HT. I still have all the side effects of the HT but the anorgasmia is gone -- last time I remembered to check.

A little personal history... I was on Celexa and had been increasing the mg per day ( 60 mg ) I think..It just killed my libido...my wife was on it, too, and it did hers, too.
During a Dr visit, I asked about these issues, and that's when I went on the Bupropion..He started me on 100 mg once a day, and when that did not seem to be doing the job ( depression,wise ) we upped it to 100mg twice daily..
After about 30 days I began to notice the sexual changes...and certainly the aided depression help..
Wife can't go on Bupropion besause she's on blood pressure meds and she's diabetic..

I took Buproprion last year as an anti-depressant. It was giving me frequent and almost painful erections. I could have lived with that, but as the dose increased, it also started giving me debilitating headaches, and I stopped taking it after less than a month.

Sounds like buproprion is working better for you. Not sure I've got much for your wife. I was taking Buproprion in addition to the SSRI antidepressant to try to mitigate the side effects, not particularly for depression. Maybe there would be something that would help her with the anhedonia that her serotonin/dopamine imbalance is causing. I tend to be excessively sleepy during the day so modafinil was an obvious choice, dunno what else is out there.)

update: I was responding to Bush, not to you, Ichabod, although your frequent, almost painful erections might strike some of us as not that big a problem. Sorry about those headaches, though.

Yeah, Ichabod...some would die for some of those erections !!!! I am hopeful that my path is upward to resolution, though..

My husband started on buproprion about 6 months ago, and it's been a lifesaver. He went into a pretty serious funk -- first he was in a ton of pain for months (he had bone mets), then he got a really scary cancer diagnosis, then he went on hormone therapy. It was a dramatic personality change and incredibly hard on him, and our family. "Incredibly hard" is a serious understatement. It was bad. To not just unpleasant but also dangerous levels.

Things are much much better now. I don't give buproprion 100% of the credit (he's done some other smart things -- started seeing a counselor, etc.), but I think it really helped.

I tried it briefly once for depression but it made me so anxious I felt I was jumping out of my skin. Serzone worked pretty well for me for depression for quite a long time without the sexual side effects that most others (other than Welbutrin) have. Not taking anything anymore.
