Hi

Has anyone ever had a blood transfusion during their cancer treatment?if so, can you help me as I have a couple of questions? I've been trying to find the answers online but can't see to locate them.

How soon after the transfusion would you feel the benefit of it?

How long do the benefits last - days, weeks, months? I know each person will be different, but on average?

Hello myhero, my husband has had 9 platelet, and, and or blood transfusions. He was told that he should feel the results with 24 hours. Fatigue should be less and maybe a little more energy, depending on what type of medications the patient is on. I will use husbands signature....but he is now in hospice, After his 5th injection of Xofigo/Radium223 his platelet count went below the required 50,000 range and was discharged from that treatment plan and therefore his bone marrow was "shot", that was why the transfusions. He also has mets to the lining of the brain......

I have not updated husbands signature. ran out of space....

Myhero sometimes treatments for cancer can effect the way your bone marrow produces the components of your blood.  When that happen a blood transfusion gives your body what is lacking. You should feel better real soon because you get the volume back in you blood.  How long it last is a guess.  If your bone marrow can start producing your blood again you may not need another transfusion.  If it only gives you a percentage of what you need than depending on how much you get is when you need transfusion. Alot depends on the treatments you are getting and how much they effect your bone marrow. So no times can be given because of how much you can produce and how much treatments distroy. Thank you ladies, I understand now. I did realise each person would be different but I have a bit more insight as to why now.

Dad has had one blood transfusion, the benifits for him was instant.
