My story is a bit of a cheat. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few months back and put on 2x500mg metformin/day. A known side effect is weight loss for some. Probably was for me; my appetite really diminished.
As an aside, i have been a vegetarian for years. But I am here to tell you one can still eat a lot of unhealthy animal free crap! Tons of chips, fries, high sugar, high fat and pretty much my lipid/cholesterol blood work has verifies this over the years. Anyway...With diabetes I decided to not eat anything with added sugar. And I did this with added oil foods to get the lipids down. Just for good measure I deleted all dairy, too (not that I ever ate much; OK small fib-oh, the lies we tell ourselves...I WAS eating some cheese.
I was drinking far too much diet pop; what's junk food without that fabulous fizz in your throat. So I really reduced the pop
For me the above was the trick. I went from 204 to 180. I also am doing 150+ minutes a week cardio and some weights.
To sum up: stop eating crap.
No flames now that I am a vegan; eat meat or dairy or not, it's the deep fried, and Doritos and candy and high fat anything, which was doing me in.
Everybody has their own path to weight loss but a big part of it was retraining my palate and taming that little voice in my head (just eat one, no worries).
